Senior Principal Electrical Wiring Designer

Location: Reading, PA
Job Type: Contract-to-Hire

We are seeking an experienced Senior Principal Electrical Wiring Designer for a contract-to-hire opportunity with our client in Reading, PA. This is an excellent opportunity for a highly skilled electrical design professional to lead complex industrial and power-related projects while mentoring junior designers and collaborating with multidisciplinary engineering teams.

The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in electrical design and drafting, a strong understanding of high- and low-voltage systems, and the ability to oversee project execution from concept through detailed design while maintaining quality, schedule, and budget objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead electrical design and drafting activities for one large or multiple smaller projects.
  • Provide technical leadership and supervision to electrical design teams, ensuring project deliverables meet client requirements and industry standards.
  • Prepare and review electrical design packages with minimal supervision.
  • Develop detailed electrical drawings, layouts, plans, sections, elevations, and installation details from engineering sketches and specifications.
  • Design and draft HV and LV electrical installations for industrial and commercial facilities.
  • Oversee the preparation and quality of design documentation produced by junior designers.
  • Coordinate work-sharing activities and ensure consistency across project deliverables.
  • Participate in design reviews with clients and provide technical guidance on electrical design, drafting standards, and code compliance.
  • Perform comprehensive point-to-point reviews of electrical design packages.
  • Prepare and maintain:
    • HV/LV single-line diagrams
    • Wiring and control schematics
    • Lighting layouts
    • Grounding and earthing plans
    • Lightning protection layouts
    • Cable tray and conduit layouts
    • Above-grade and underground cable routing
    • Duct bank layouts
    • AC/DC distribution panel drawings
    • Substation and switchyard layouts
    • Electrical equipment layouts
    • Installation details
  • Develop cable schedules and perform:
    • Cable pulling calculations
    • Cable tray sizing calculations
    • Cable selection and sizing calculations
    • Lighting calculations using AGI32 or similar software
  • Perform field visits for panel audits, site walkdowns, and raceway routing verification.
  • Maintain project documentation in accordance with quality assurance procedures.
  • Complete assigned work within established project schedules and budgets.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate degree, technical diploma, or equivalent discipline-specific education in Electrical Design, Drafting, or a related field.
  • Extensive experience in electrical design and drafting for industrial, utility, energy, or heavy industrial projects.
  • Strong proficiency with:
    • SmartPlant Electrical (SPEL)
    • SmartPlant Instrumentation (SPI)
    • AutoCAD
    • MicroStation
  • Experience working with SmartPlant 3D and participating in 3D model reviews.
  • Experience producing detailed electrical construction drawings and installation packages.
  • Thorough understanding of electrical drafting standards, industry codes, and design best practices.
  • Strong leadership skills with experience mentoring and directing junior designers.
  • Ability to perform detailed quality reviews of electrical design packages.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to travel to project sites as needed for field verification and design support.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with AVEVA E3D.
  • Additional education or equivalent combination of experience and technical training in electrical design.
  • Experience supporting EPC, industrial manufacturing, energy, power generation, or utility projects.
