Lilly is currently constructing an advanced manufacturing facility for production of API molecules located in Houston, TX. This facility is intended to provide APIs for current and future products, including new modalities. This is a unique opportunity to be a part of the site technical team for the Houston startup of a greenfield manufacturing site, and the successful candidate will help to build the organization, the facility and the culture to enable a successful startup into GMP manufacturing operations.

The Senior Principal Associate - Industrial Hygienist is a key member of the HSE team for a greenfield manufacturing site in Houston, Texas, providing site-wide technical leadership across project delivery, startup, and ongoing operations. This role is engaged early to influence facility and process design, engineering controls, containment strategies, and management of change requirements that protect employees and support compliant, reliable operations. The individual will also establish the foundational industrial hygiene programs, procedures, systems, and business processes needed for operational readiness and will serve as the site subject matter expert for industrial hygiene during routine operations.

Responsibilities:

Pre-Startup and Startup Phase

  • Lead site-wide industrial hygiene support for project design, construction, equipment selection, and startup activities to inform risk assessments, engineering controls, containment strategies, and management of change requirements for processes, equipment, and work environments.
  • Develop and implement the site industrial hygiene framework, including written programs, procedures, exposure assessment strategies, governance processes, business processes, and training needed to support operational readiness and GMP manufacturing.
  • Partner with project, engineering, operations, occupational health, maintenance, and quality stakeholders to identify industrial hygiene risks, implement practical control measures, and integrate requirements into site systems, startup plans, and safe work practices.

Post-Startup Phase

  • Oversee site industrial hygiene programs during operations, including exposure monitoring, medical surveillance support, respiratory protection, hazard communication, personal protective equipment, biological safety, and other applicable industrial hygiene programs, as well as required permits, reporting, and interactions with health and regulatory agencies, as applicable.
  • Develop prioritized monitoring plans, interpret exposure and assessment data, prepare recommendations and reports, support audits and investigations, and track performance metrics to drive compliance, program effectiveness, and continuous improvement across the site lifecycle.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required in industrial hygiene, occupational health, safety, engineering, chemistry, biology, environmental health, or a related scientific or technical discipline.
  • 5+ years of relevant industrial hygiene and HSE experience within GMP manufacturing (pharmaceutical or chemical manufacturing preferred).
  • Qualified applicants must be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. Lilly will not provide support for or sponsor work authorization or visas for this role, including but not limited to F-1 CPT, F-1 OPT, F-1 STEM OPT, J-1, H-1B, TN, O-1, E-3, H-1B1, or L-1.

Additional Skills/ Preferences:

  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) certification preferred; candidates actively working toward certification may also be considered based on experience and qualifications.
  • Previous experience supporting greenfield, startup, or major capital project environments in pharmaceutical, biotech, chemical, or other regulated manufacturing settings.
  • Previous experience in cGMP pharmaceutical, biotech, or chemical manufacturing environments.
  • Proficiency in industrial hygiene exposure assessment, air sampling strategy, data interpretation, and the application of engineering controls and containment concepts.
  • Previous experience with respiratory protection, medical surveillance, hazard communication, personal protective equipment, biological safety, hazardous materials management, and applicable occupational health reporting requirements.
  • Proven ability to influence cross-functional teams and provide sound technical recommendations during design reviews, risk assessments, and operational readiness planning.

Additional Information:

  • Position Location: Houston, Texas
  • Travel Percentage (%): Less than 5% annually.
  • Shift Information: Primarily day shift; additional flexibility and occasional off-hours support may be needed during project delivery, startup, and ongoing site operations.

Actual compensation will depend on a candidate's education, experience, skills, and geographic location. The anticipated wage for this position is

$101,250 - $169,400

Full-time equivalent employees also will be eligible for a company bonus (depending, in part, on company and individual performance).
