Are you inspired by building safety into autonomous technologies that will transform how customers receive deliveries? Do you want to lead the definition of safety requirements and mechanisms for autonomous delivery systems at global scale? Amazon is building disruptive autonomous vehicle technology with the vision of creating the safest autonomous delivery operations in the world. We are pioneering safety-first approaches to autonomous systems and building innovative mechanisms that embed safety into every aspect of product design, from initial concept through deployment and operation.

You will define safety requirements and build mechanisms with autonomous vehicle engineering teams. You will partner with Tech, Robotics, Engineering, Operations, Safety, Legal, and Compliance teams to ensure safety is built into autonomous vehicle products from the ground up. You will thrive in ambiguity, building and communicating a clear approach to autonomous vehicle safety that balances speed of innovation with rigorous safety standards. You will be expected to regularly display the following abilities: 1) High ownership and accountability for autonomous vehicle safety outcomes with the ability to define comprehensive safety requirements 2) Ability to navigate ambiguity with flexibility and decisiveness while balancing innovation with safety-critical design principles 3) Skills to work across diverse technical and non-technical stakeholder teams to communicate, convince and deliver safety mechanisms and 4) Ability to think big on a vision for transformative autonomous vehicle safety while being rooted in constant execution and measurable safety improvements.

This is a critical role with room to innovate and solve key autonomous vehicle safety challenges at scale. Strong experience designing safety-critical systems and working with robotics or autonomous vehicle engineering teams is required.

Key job responsibilities

  • Develop comprehensive safety requirements for autonomous delivery vehicles across all operational scenarios including navigation, obstacle detection and avoidance, pedestrian interaction, vehicle-to-vehicle communication, and emergency response protocols.
  • Define and own the autonomous vehicle safety requirements roadmap and strategy - establish safety standards, testing protocols, validation mechanisms, and continuous monitoring frameworks for autonomous systems.
  • Build mechanisms with autonomous vehicle engineering teams to embed safety into product design, from concept through deployment. Create safety review processes, design guidelines, testing frameworks, and safety validation checkpoints.
  • Write and present compelling business cases (backed by strong research and autonomous vehicle safety data analysis) for safety mechanism investments in partnership with all stakeholder teams.
  • Partner with Tech, Robotics, Engineering, Operations, Safety, Compliance, and Legal teams to design safety-first autonomous vehicle experiences that protect pedestrians, other road users, and property while enabling innovative delivery solutions.
  • Own end-to-end safety requirement development from initial concept to operational deployment - write safety requirement specifications, establish testing and validation protocols, monitor implementation, and ensure delivery meets rigorous safety standards.
  • Monitor and report on autonomous vehicle safety metrics and KPIs to senior leadership across Amazon - track safety incidents, near-miss events, system performance against safety requirements, and demonstrate continuous safety improvements.
  • Ensure compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT), National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), and other regulatory requirements while staying ahead of evolving autonomous vehicle safety regulations and standards.
  • Drive adoption of safety mechanisms and best practices across autonomous vehicle engineering teams. Ensure that safety requirements are effectively integrated into design, development, testing, and deployment processes.
  • Establish safety testing and validation frameworks including simulation testing, closed-course testing, and real-world pilot testing protocols that demonstrate safety before scaling operations.
  • Manage complex, multi-stakeholder safety programs with compressed timelines. Find creative approaches to meet deadlines while never compromising on safety standards.
  • Create clear, effective written communication to present safety requirements, decision points, or data-based arguments that enable delivering on autonomous vehicle safety goals. Communicate to diverse audiences ranging from robotics engineers to senior leadership.

About the Company

Amazon.com Inc

At Amazon, we don’t wait for the next big idea to present itself. We envision the shape of impossible things and then we boldly make them reality. So far, this mindset has helped us achieve some incredible things. Let’s build new systems, challenge the status quo, and design the world we want to live in. We believe the work you do here will be the best work of your life.

Wherever you are in your career exploration, Amazon likely has an opportunity for you. Our research scientists and engineers shape the future of natural language understanding with Alexa. Fulfillment center associates around the globe send customer orders from our warehouses to doorsteps. Product managers set feature requirements, strategy, and marketing messages for brand new customer experiences. And as we grow, we’ll add jobs that haven’t been invented yet.

It’s Always Day 1
At Amazon, it’s always “Day 1.” Now, what does this mean and why does it matter? It means that our approach remains the same as it was on Amazon’s very first day – to make smart, fast decisions, stay nimble, invent, and stay focused on delighting our customers. In our 2016 shareholder letter, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos shared his thoughts on how to keep up a Day 1 company mindset. “Staying in Day 1 requires you to experiment patiently, accept failures, plant seeds, protect saplings, and double down when you see customer delight,” he wrote. “A customer-obsessed culture best creates the conditions where all of that can happen.” You can read the full letter here

Our Leadership Principles
Our Leadership Principles help us keep a Day 1 mentality. They aren’t just a pretty inspirational wall hanging. Amazonians use them, every day, whether they’re discussing ideas for new projects, deciding on the best solution for a customer’s problem, or interviewing candidates.
