The City of Torrance is recruiting for Senior Program Specialists to be part of the Community Services Team! The Community Services Department offers Torrance residents the unique opportunity to help achieve a sense of purpose, identity, self-worth and improvedself-esteem within the specialized areas of Cultural Arts, Library, Parks and Recreation. The Senior Program Specialist plans, organizes, and directs major Community Services special events and programs within a specialty area. This position generally supervises multiple sites or a complex site operation and does related work as required. This is a recurrent, part-time, non-civil service, as needed position. This position is eligible for PERS and may be eligible for prorated benefits.
The Senior Program Specialist assists with the planning, organizing, implementation, and supervision of Community Adult Sports Leagues and Programs, including Softball, Roller Hockey, and Basketball, and the coordination, operation and supervision of part-time personnel for programs and multiple sports facilities including the Dee Hardison Sports Center, LA Galaxy Sports Complex, and a covered outdoor roller hockey rink. Hours are approximately 32 per week, Sunday through Saturday, working evening and weekend hours as a part of regular schedule.
The Bartlett Senior Center offers a place that provides a welcoming environment where seniors can come together and engage in a variety of activities tailored to their interests and preferences. From exercise classes to a lunch program and craft clubs, the Center offers diverse interest-based activities to cater to different passions and hobbies. Amenities offered include a mini fitness center, multiple activity rooms, billiards tables, and more, ensuring there's something for everyone to enjoy. The Torrance Travelers trips offer seniors the chance to embark on exciting adventures and create lasting memories with fellow members. Additionally, a walking club, gardening club, lapidary workshop, and tech days are offered to keep individuals active, creative, and learning. As a partner of Optimum Life Educational Foundation (OLEF), a non-profit organization, the Center offers multiple classes covering a wide range of subjects, providing opportunities for continuous growth and exploration.
Hours for the Senior Centers are approximately 30-35 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. This position may be required to work weekends and holidays.

Education and Experience Any combination of education and experience that would have provided the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be: Graduation from High School or equivalent and two years of increasingly responsible part-time experience at the level of a Program Specialist. A BA/BS in Recreation, Cultural Studies, or a related field is desirable.
License and/or Certificates Negative tuberculin test. Some positions may require the following certifications: A valid California Class C Driver's License. Certification in Red Cross or American Heart Association Basic Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is desirable.

Performance of the essential duties of this position includes the following physical demands and/or working conditions: Work is typically performed at indoor and outdoor program sites in seasonal weather conditions. Work may require exposure to noise, dust and dirt. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet while in the office, and moderately loud when in the field. Physical demands may include bending, kneeling, squatting, sitting, running and climbing. May lift or move up to 50 pounds with assistance. Work irregular hours, shifts, or weekends as required.
