The Australian Regenerative Medicine Institute (ARMI) at Monash University is seeking an exceptional, forward-thinking Senior Research Fellow / Associate Professor (Research) to join us as an EMBL Australia Group Leader. In this pivotal role, you will head an independent research team dedicated to unravelling the basic mechanisms of the regenerative process, enabling the next generation of discoveries to prevent, halt, and reverse damage from disease and injury.  We are looking for recruits whose research program that align with any of the current research themes at ARMI: https://armi.org.au/our-groups/

Located at one of the world's largest regenerative medicine and stem cell research hubs, ARMI offers a highly stimulating, cross-disciplinary environment. You will collaborate closely with elite institutions like the Monash Institute for Medical Engineering (MIME), the Biomedical Discovery Institute (BDI), and CSIRO. As an EMBL Australia Group Leader you will also be deeply embedded within the EMBL Australia Partner Laboratory Network. 

Key Responsibilities

• Lead & Innovate: Head an independent research team, driving major original contributions to the field of regenerative medicine.
• Mentor & Supervise: Manage and mentor research-support staff, less senior academic researchers, and postgraduate/honours research projects.
• Secure & Manage Funding: Prepare high-impact research proposals, secure external funding, and oversee grant financial management.
• Collaborate: Promote strong research links with external bodies and contribute significantly to the broader scientific community, especially the EMBL Australia Partner Laboratory Network
• Contribute: Represent ARMI and EMBL Australia through active participation in collaborative initiatives including mentoring, training and outreach programs.

Who We Are Looking For

• A PhD/Doctoral qualification in a relevant discipline with significant subsequent research experience.
• An emerging international trajectory with a strong national or international profile in regenerative medicine.
• A proven track record of publishing in high-quality international scientific journals.
• Demonstrated success in generating research income and managing large research projects/teams.   
• A commitment to team science, open, responsible research (FAIR data), and a collaborative mindset.

About EMBL Australia

Australia is the first Associate Member of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL). EMBL is an international research organisation that fosters excellence by providing a highly collaborative environment that benefits the research of all its scientists, whether at the graduate, post-doctoral or group leader level.

A key initiative of the associate membership is an EMBL Partnership Programme established in 2010, entitled ‘EMBL Australia Partner Laboratory Network’. The partnership of EMBL with Australian host institutions provides long-term funded research-focused positions for early to mid-career researchers to pursue ambitious research programs. This position is modelled on the ethos and support offered by EMBL within its European network of research laboratories. It also aims to seed a dynamic, highly collaborative culture across Australia, conducting research of the highest international standing. In general, the PLN appoints Group Leaders early in their career and provides them with a supportive environment to achieve highly ambitious research goals. The successful candidate will exhibit a strong motivation to work in the multidisciplinary and collaborative environment of the PLN and a willingness to grasp the opportunity to interact with many other research groups across the network. The candidate will also be expected to actively participate in the development of the PLN culture by contributing to various programs such as scientific summits and student programs aimed to raise scientific excellence.

This research leadership position will lead a group for an initial period of five years at ARMI, Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, Monash University. Appointments will be made on merit and classified at the relevant level according to the skills and experience of the successful candidate.
