Position Title: Senior Safety and Security Technology Specialist

Starting Salary: $75,000

Position Summary:

The Safety and Security Technology Specialist serves as the primary technology liaison for the Safety and Security Department and supports the implementation, maintenance, and optimization of safety-related technology systems across the District. This position bridges the work of the Safety and Security Team, Emergency Preparedness Team, Information Technology Department, and school-based staff to ensure that safety technology solutions effectively support emergency preparedness, incident response, threat mitigation, and day-to-day security operations.

The Safety and Security Technology Specialist is responsible for managing and maintaining security technology systems, including surveillance cameras, access control systems, emergency notification platforms, visitor management systems, and other safety-related technologies. The position also supports emergency preparedness initiatives by coordinating technology implementation efforts, ensuring operational readiness of safety systems, and assisting with compliance related to emergency operations planning and required school safety drills.

Essential Functions:

Safety Technology Systems Management

  • Serve as the primary technology liaison for the Safety and Security Department, coordinating with District technology staff, vendors, contractors, and school-based personnel.
  • Manage, monitor, maintain, and troubleshoot safety and security technology systems, including but not limited to surveillance cameras, video management systems, access control systems, emergency notification systems, visitor management platforms, panic alert systems, and related technologies.
  • Coordinate the installation, testing, repair, replacement, and upgrading of safety and security technology infrastructure.
  • Conduct regular inspections, audits, and performance reviews of safety technology systems to ensure operational readiness and reliability.
  • Track, document, and resolve technology-related issues affecting safety and security operations.
  • Maintain inventories of safety and security equipment and technology assets.
  • Develop and maintain procedures for technology maintenance, system monitoring, and equipment replacement schedules.

Emergency Preparedness and Operational Support

  • Collaborate with the Emergency Preparedness Team to identify, implement, and maintain technology solutions that support emergency management and school safety initiatives.
  • Coordinate with the Emergency Preparedness Management Team and the Director of Safety and Security to ensure all emergency operations plans and required school-based drills, including fire drills, tornado drills, earthquake drills, intruder drills, reunification exercises, and other emergency response activities, are completed, documented, and implemented in accordance with District standards and applicable regulations.
  • Support emergency preparedness exercises, training activities, and after-action reviews by providing technology expertise and operational support.
  • Assist in evaluating emerging safety technologies and recommend solutions that enhance District preparedness, prevention, response, and recovery capabilities.
  • Ensure critical safety systems remain operational during emergency events and support incident response efforts as needed.

Collaboration and Stakeholder Support

  • Serve as a resource to school administrators and District staff regarding safety and security technology systems and best practices.
  • Partner with Information Technology staff to ensure effective integration, cybersecurity, and functionality of safety-related technology platforms.
  • Coordinate with vendors and contractors regarding equipment maintenance, warranty services, installations, and repairs.
  • Provide training and technical support to administrators, security personnel, and school staff on safety technology systems.
  • Assist with the development of technology-related safety protocols, procedures, and documentation.

Compliance, Reporting, and Continuous Improvement

  • Maintain records, reports, and documentation related to safety technology systems, inspections, maintenance activities, and compliance requirements.
  • Monitor technology performance metrics and recommend improvements to increase effectiveness, reliability, and efficiency.
  • Assist in the development and management of safety technology budgets and capital improvement projects.
  • Stay current on industry trends, emerging technologies, school safety best practices, and applicable regulations impacting safety and security operations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of District safety, security, and emergency preparedness initiatives.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of school safety, emergency preparedness, and security technology systems, including surveillance cameras, access control, emergency notification, and visitor management platforms.
  • Knowledge of applicable safety regulations, emergency operations procedures, and industry best practices.
  • Strong technical troubleshooting, problem-solving, and system maintenance skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Ability to analyze operational needs and recommend effective technology solutions.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with administrators, staff, technology teams, vendors, and public safety partners.
  • Ability to provide training and technical support to users with varying levels of technical expertise.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, exercise sound judgment, and perform effectively during emergency situations.

Experience:

  • Experience supporting security technology systems, emergency preparedness operations, school safety programs, or a related field.
  • Experience with video surveillance systems, access control platforms, emergency notification systems, or other physical security technologies (required).
  • Experience working in a K-12 educational environment, public sector organization, or emergency management setting (highly preferred).
  • Relevant industry certifications related to security technology, emergency management, project management, or information technology (preferred).
  • Have a minimum of two years of continued service as a permanent Safety Officer II within Saint Louis Public Schools (preferred)
  • Have two years of experience with an accredited law enforcement agency (preferred)
  • Maintain and follow all Private security firearm guidelines regarding storage, usage, and training (required)
  • Pass annual and pre-annual firearm qualifications (required)

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree (preferred)

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle
  • Must be able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, and pull or otherwise move objects
  • Frequent sitting, standing, and walking, which may be required for long periods, and may involve climbing stairs
  • Occasional reaching with hands and arms, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and must be able to pull up to 30 pounds with no assistance
  • On occasion may be required to perform stressful and physical activity

Working Conditions and Environment:

  • Work is routinely performed in a typical interior/school environment
  • Must be able to perform his/her duties in inclement weather conditions
  • May be exposed to or required to handle sensitive and confidential information
  • Hours and shifts are subject to change based on the needs of the Department
  • Attendance at Board Meetings or other extra activities is required
