Senior SAS Software Engineer IV (Modernization & Discovery Focus)

Pay Rate: $80.00 - $85.00per hr.
Our client needs a Senior SAS Software Engineer to support and modernize a long-standing SAS environment within a large financial services organization. This is not simply a maintenance role. This position will lead deep discovery efforts across a 20+ year legacy SAS ecosystem, document business and technical workflows, and provide recommendations for modernization and potential migration to more sustainable technologies. The ideal candidate brings strong hands-on SAS expertise, experience navigating legacy systems, and the ability to make thoughtful architectural recommendations.
SAS Environment Stabilization
- Analyze and maintain 20+ years of legacy SAS jobs
- Read and interpret complex SAS code
- Support batch processing workflows and mainframe file ingestion
- Assist with production support as needed
Discovery & Documentation (Major Deliverable)
- Identify system owners and stakeholders
- Engage business and technology partners to understand job purpose
- Map dependencies, integrations, and reporting outputs
- Document job flows, data movement, and business logic
- Clarify why processes exist and who consumes outputs
Modernization & Recommendations
- Evaluate replacement options using existing enterprise tools
- Provide technology recommendations aligned to corporate standards
- Identify opportunities to migrate SAS processes to modern platforms
- Contribute to architectural direction and transition planning
Required Skills:
- 5–7+ years of hands-on SAS programming experience (Statistical Analysis System)
- Experience maintaining and interpreting legacy SAS environments
- Strong background in batch processing and data transformation
- Ability to work independently in lightly documented systems
- Strong analytical and documentation skills
- .NET / C# or C++ development experience
Bonus Skills:
- Experience migrating from SAS to another technology stack
- SQL Server and/or Oracle exposure
- Experience with SSRS or Power BI reporting
- Familiarity with data lakes or AWS/cloud platforms
- Financial services or banking industry experience (preferred, not required)
- Bachelor's degree preferred (experience may substitute)
