AWS Bill Generation (BillGen) converts over 20 petabytes of metering data into billions of dollars of revenue every month - running the billing system for one of the largest hyperscalers on

the planet. We"re looking for a Senior Software Development Manager to lead our ~40-person Bill Run Orchestration organization within BillGen. The Orchestration organization's North Star is to transform AWS bill run from a batch-based process to a fully autonomous real-time streaming process, while ensuring accurate, timely and clear bills for customers.

The role is technically challenging with elements of scale, precision and speed. Scale - millions of customers, a global footprint, per-second billing. Precision - customers demand penny-level precision. Speed - need for real-time billing for GenAI cost control. For example: how do you recompute a customer"s entire billing state in minutes when a single retroactive pricing change cascades across months of usage data? How do you orchestrate 21 million accounts through a computation pipeline where a single misrouted event can have customer visible impact? How do you provide customers with a real-time cost estimate to prevent GenAI usage over-runs?

In this role, you will own end-to-end bill run execution across all AWS partitions, drive the technical vision for autonomous billing operations, and build the team that

ensures every customer receives an accurate cost estimated in minutes and an accurate bill on time - every month, without exception. You"ll lead the migration from reactive war rooms to intelligent agents that detect, diagnose, and resolve issues before customers notice. You protect the timeliness of the final bill run, which unlocks hundred of millions of Free Cash Flow (FCF) for Amazon.

  • Lead a multi-team engineering organization across Arlington, Berlin, and Seattle
  • Own the reliability and timeliness of billing artifacts for all AWS customers globally
  • Drive the transformation to real-time billing operations
  • Build and evolve a large-scale orchestration platform processing millions of accounts monthly

Key job responsibilities

  • Lead and grow a multi-team organization of engineers and engineering managers across Arlington, Berlin, and Seattle, fostering a culture of operational excellence, deep ownership, and customer obsession.
  • Plan and execute on a quarterly cadence to maintain agility, balancing near-term reliability wins with long-horizon bets on real-time billing, agentic automation, and platform consolidation.
  • Own the end-to-end reliability of bill run execution across all AWS partitions - from scheduling through computation, validation, and artifact delivery. Drive the transformation from batch-based monthly processing to continuous, real-time operations with zero manual intervention.
  • Establish operational excellence standards for both estimated and final bill runs. Build autonomous capabilities - agents that detect, diagnose, and remediate billing anomalies before customers are impacted.
  • Partner with other organizations within AWS to drive resolution across organizational boundaries, especially during high-pressure operational events.
  • Represent the team in senior leadership reviews, COE reviews, and cross-organization forums with clarity and conviction.

About the team

AWS Bill Generation (BillGen) turns every AWS customer"s usage into accurate, timely bills. Within the BillGen group, the Bill Run Orchestration organization owns the scheduling, sequencing, monitoring, and delivery of billing artifacts across all AWS partitions globally. We detect, diagnose, and fix billing issues - and increasingly build systems that do this autonomously.

We"re transforming from monthly batch processing and manual war rooms to continuous billing, autonomous agents, and self-healing infrastructure. We believe operational burden is a technical problem, not a staffing problem. Distributed across Arlington, Berlin, and Seattle, we value ownership over territory, automation over heroics, and shipping over perfecting.

It’s Always Day 1
At Amazon, it’s always “Day 1.” Now, what does this mean and why does it matter? It means that our approach remains the same as it was on Amazon’s very first day – to make smart, fast decisions, stay nimble, invent, and stay focused on delighting our customers. In our 2016 shareholder letter, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos shared his thoughts on how to keep up a Day 1 company mindset. “Staying in Day 1 requires you to experiment patiently, accept failures, plant seeds, protect saplings, and double down when you see customer delight,” he wrote. “A customer-obsessed culture best creates the conditions where all of that can happen.” You can read the full letter here

Our Leadership Principles
Our Leadership Principles help us keep a Day 1 mentality. They aren’t just a pretty inspirational wall hanging. Amazonians use them, every day, whether they’re discussing ideas for new projects, deciding on the best solution for a customer’s problem, or interviewing candidates.
