    Description

The DynamoDB team's mission is to serve the world's most critical and demanding applications. DynamoDB is a NoSQL database that delivers consistent performance at any scale. Many of the world"s fastest growing businesses such as Disney+, Snap, and Zoom depend on the scale and performance of DynamoDB to support some of the world's most demanding applications. Hundreds of thousands of AWS customers choose DynamoDB for mobile, web, gaming, ad tech, IoT, and other applications that need low-latency data access at any scale.

We are looking for a Senior Software Development Manager to lead DynamoDB"s Indexing organization. In this role, you will own the technical vision, roadmap, and execution for DynamoDB"s indexing infrastructure, including Global Secondary Indexes, and next-generation customer-facing index build capabilities. You will lead a team of senior engineers and engineering managers, driving innovation that directly shapes how millions of customers access and query their data.

This is a high-impact role that sits at the intersection of distributed systems engineering, customer experience, and long-term platform strategy. You will partner closely with DynamoDB"s Storage, Replication, and Control Plane teams, as well as AWS leadership, to define and deliver a multi-year indexing roadmap that raises the bar on performance, reliability, and developer experience.

    Key job responsibilities

    • Lead and grow a multi-team organization of senior engineers and engineering managers focused on DynamoDB indexing systems, fostering a culture of technical excellence, ownership, and customer obsession.
    • Define and execute a 1-3 year technical roadmap for DynamoDB indexing, balancing near-term customer needs with long-term architectural investments.
    • Drive architectural decisions for large-scale distributed indexing systems, including index build pipelines, consistency models, and cross-region index replication.
    • Partner with product and business stakeholders to translate customer requirements into engineering priorities, ensuring the team delivers features that have measurable customer impact.
    • Establish operational excellence standards for the indexing platform, including availability, latency, and durability targets, and lead the team in meeting and exceeding those targets.
    • Recruit, develop, and retain top engineering talent; build a diverse, high-performing organization with a strong pipeline of future leaders.
    • Collaborate across DynamoDB and AWS with peer SDMs and Directors to align on shared infrastructure, resolve cross-team dependencies, and contribute to org-wide engineering strategy.
    • Represent the Indexing organization in senior leadership reviews, communicating progress, risks, and strategic direction with clarity and confidence.

At Amazon, we don’t wait for the next big idea to present itself. We envision the shape of impossible things and then we boldly make them reality. So far, this mindset has helped us achieve some incredible things. Let’s build new systems, challenge the status quo, and design the world we want to live in. We believe the work you do here will be the best work of your life.

Wherever you are in your career exploration, Amazon likely has an opportunity for you. Our research scientists and engineers shape the future of natural language understanding with Alexa. Fulfillment center associates around the globe send customer orders from our warehouses to doorsteps. Product managers set feature requirements, strategy, and marketing messages for brand new customer experiences. And as we grow, we’ll add jobs that haven’t been invented yet.

    It’s Always Day 1
At Amazon, it’s always “Day 1.” Now, what does this mean and why does it matter? It means that our approach remains the same as it was on Amazon’s very first day – to make smart, fast decisions, stay nimble, invent, and stay focused on delighting our customers. In our 2016 shareholder letter, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos shared his thoughts on how to keep up a Day 1 company mindset. “Staying in Day 1 requires you to experiment patiently, accept failures, plant seeds, protect saplings, and double down when you see customer delight,” he wrote. “A customer-obsessed culture best creates the conditions where all of that can happen.” You can read the full letter here

    Our Leadership Principles
Our Leadership Principles help us keep a Day 1 mentality. They aren’t just a pretty inspirational wall hanging. Amazonians use them, every day, whether they’re discussing ideas for new projects, deciding on the best solution for a customer’s problem, or interviewing candidates.
