Do you want to own Identity systems that major AWS and Stores services depends on to exist and the layers that make that data consumable by every service that needs it? The LDAP Core and Switchboard teams are part of the AFSS Identity organization within Amazon"s Foundational Security Services. We hold the records of engineering identity at Amazon, and we make that record reachable through modern access pattern.

LDAP Core operates the canonical engineering identity directory: the 389DS LDAP fleet, its global replication topology, and the regionalized architecture (REGAL) we are building to replace it by 2027. Switchboard builds the routing, temporal, analytical, and control layers that surround that directory the Read Proxy, Time Machine, the Identity Data Lake, and GSAM, the control plane for millions of system accounts across Amazon"s engineering data planes.

Key job responsibilities

  • Lead the REGAL regionalized architecture: read/write fleet split, Regal Replicator, and ORR through full partition coverage
  • Own 389DS software lifecycle: upgrade train, master fleet replication, schema management across commercial, GovCloud, ADC, China, and MVP
  • Drive pipeline-driven automated region builds, eliminating manual ceremony from partition expansion
  • Lead schema evolution discipline: document every attribute, analyze consumer impact end-to-end before every change
  • Architect and evolve the LDAP Read Proxy: schema-routed access, expansion to BRASS and additional backends, transparent to existing callers
  • Own GSAM as the system-account control plane across LDAP, POSIX, ANT : lifecycle management, credential rotation, ANT auto-provisioning, and the path to passwordless system accounts
  • Own LDAP Time Machine and the Identity Data Lake: snapshot pipelines, S3 vending, cross-region log analytics, and IdP security intelligence
  • Set the observability standard across every access path -direct, proxied, historical, analytical, consistent telemetry, uniform authorization
  • Serve as Tier-1 on-call anchor for directory availability and replication health
  • Mentor engineers and raise the technical bar across both teams

A day in the life

You"ll start by reviewing system metrics and addressing any operational issues affecting our Identity services. Throughout the day, you"ll collaborate with Identity and Access Management service teams to design features, participate in architecture reviews for scalability improvements, and write high-performance code to handle authentication and authorization requests across Amazon"s services. You"ll also mentor team members through code reviews and contribute to strategic planning for next-generation identity systems.

About the Company

Amazon.com Inc

At Amazon, we don’t wait for the next big idea to present itself. We envision the shape of impossible things and then we boldly make them reality. So far, this mindset has helped us achieve some incredible things. Let’s build new systems, challenge the status quo, and design the world we want to live in. We believe the work you do here will be the best work of your life.

Wherever you are in your career exploration, Amazon likely has an opportunity for you. Our research scientists and engineers shape the future of natural language understanding with Alexa. Fulfillment center associates around the globe send customer orders from our warehouses to doorsteps. Product managers set feature requirements, strategy, and marketing messages for brand new customer experiences. And as we grow, we’ll add jobs that haven’t been invented yet.

It’s Always Day 1
At Amazon, it’s always “Day 1.” Now, what does this mean and why does it matter? It means that our approach remains the same as it was on Amazon’s very first day – to make smart, fast decisions, stay nimble, invent, and stay focused on delighting our customers. In our 2016 shareholder letter, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos shared his thoughts on how to keep up a Day 1 company mindset. “Staying in Day 1 requires you to experiment patiently, accept failures, plant seeds, protect saplings, and double down when you see customer delight,” he wrote. “A customer-obsessed culture best creates the conditions where all of that can happen.” You can read the full letter here

Our Leadership Principles
Our Leadership Principles help us keep a Day 1 mentality. They aren’t just a pretty inspirational wall hanging. Amazonians use them, every day, whether they’re discussing ideas for new projects, deciding on the best solution for a customer’s problem, or interviewing candidates.
