As a Senior Software Engineer 2 / Team Lead, Legacy Platform Engineering, you will lead the engineering team responsible for three established Frontline applications. This is a hands-on team leadership role with meaningful ownership. You will be accountable for the team's delivery, help set its technical direction, grow the engineers around you, and contribute directly to the code when your expertise can move the team forward.

Our legacy applications span React, .NET/C#, and Angular, so you will need the technical range to move comfortably across different codebases and the judgment to determine where modernization creates meaningful value and where stability, simplicity, and focused investment better serve our customers.

You will approach those decisions with educators and school districts in mind, working to understand what matters most, not simply what has been requested. You will balance near-term delivery with reliability, security, maintainability, and long-term customer outcomes.

How you''ll drive success

You will provide hands-on technical and delivery leadership for the Legacy Platform Engineering team while creating the clarity, standards, and collaboration engineers need to do their best work.

• Own end-to-end delivery across the Legacy team, taking accountability for team outcomes, quality, predictability, and production readiness, not only your individual contributions.
• Lead sprint planning, technical decomposition, solution design, and design reviews, translating priorities into clear, achievable engineering plans.
• Serve as the onshore technical lead and escalation point for the Legacy applications, creating strong working relationships and clear accountability across distributed and offshore contributors.
• Design and implement complex, cross-cutting features from initial scoping and architecture through development, testing, deployment, monitoring, and ongoing support.
• Work fluently across React, .NET/C#, Angular, REST APIs, microservices, data layers, and AWS cloud services, moving across the stack as team and customer needs require.
• Build deep technical understanding of critical modules and services and help ensure they meet expectations for performance, reliability, security, maintainability, and production readiness.
• Dive into established codebases to understand how systems behave before recommending change, making pragmatic modernization decisions based on customer impact, risk, effort, and sustainable value.
• Partner closely with Product Management to understand the problem behind a request, evaluate technical feasibility, surface trade-offs, and shape solutions around meaningful customer and business outcomes.
• Coordinate with QA, DevOps, Architecture, and adjacent engineering teams on shared components, dependencies, testing strategies, deployment practices, and production readiness.
• Lead thoughtful code reviews and technical design discussions, helping the team maintain a high bar for quality while keeping standards practical for the systems and problems at hand.
• Mentor engineers through pairing, feedback, design discussions, and code review, creating opportunities for others to strengthen their judgment, confidence, and technical capabilities.
• Use AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Codex, and other emerging tools throughout appropriate parts of the engineering lifecycle to accelerate exploration, development, testing, debugging, documentation, and problem-solving.
• Apply strong engineering judgment to AI-assisted work, validating generated output for correctness, security, maintainability, performance, and alignment with established engineering practices before it reaches production.
• Help the team share effective AI-enabled development practices so productivity gains strengthen collective capability rather than remaining isolated to individual contributors.
• Proactively identify technical debt and recurring sources of friction across the applications, then recommend sequenced improvements that balance customer value, engineering capacity, reliability, and modernization needs.
• Surface delivery risks, technical trade-offs, and production concerns early, bringing the right people together to make informed decisions and maintain momentum.
• Continuously look for opportunities to simplify how the team works, improve engineering practices, and deliver better outcomes without adding unnecessary process.

What you bring to help us grow

• 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, including demonstrated experience leading technical execution and delivery for an engineering team.
• Strong hands-on full-stack proficiency across React, .NET/C#, and Angular, with the ability to contribute directly to complex production systems.
• Experience designing, developing, and supporting REST APIs, microservices, and cloud-based applications using AWS or comparable cloud services.
• Experience working effectively in established or legacy codebases, including making thoughtful system-design and incremental-modernization trade-offs.
• Experience taking complex features through the full engineering lifecycle, including design, development, testing, deployment, monitoring, and production support.
• Experience using AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Codex, or similar technologies to support software design, development, testing, debugging, or delivery.
• Strong technical judgment and the ability to evaluate AI-generated output rather than accepting it without appropriate review and validation.
• Experience leading code reviews, technical design discussions, and engineering planning while helping other engineers grow.
• Clear written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to make technical complexity, trade-offs, risks, and decisions understandable to technical and non-technical partners.
• Comfort serving as an onshore technical lead for a team that may include distributed or offshore contributors.

Experience with SaaS or multi-tenant platforms, distributed systems, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, observability tooling, or K-12 technology will help you contribute quickly. Familiarity with the Inspired Product Model and experience improving engineering standards, development practices, or tooling are also valuable.

Compensation & Benefits

Frontline Education offers a competitive compensation package aligned to experience, skills, and internal equity. This role is eligible for performance-based incentives where applicable.

Benefits include 401(k) with company match, Employee Stock Purchase Plan (ESPP), comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage, Personalized Paid Time Off, and tuition reimbursement for eligible coursework. This follows the current compensation-and-benefits treatment used in Frontline Technology JDs where a role-specific salary range has not been provided.

Base Salary Range: $140,000 - 155,000 / Year
