Senior SQL Server / Azure Database Administrator

Location: Dauphin County
Work Arrangement: 100% Remote
Schedule: 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM, Monday-Friday (8 hours/day, 5 days/week)
Interview: In-person first-round interview preferred; virtual via Teams may be considered
Contract: Nov 2026 - Jun 2027 (11/02/2026 - 06/30/2027). Historically, these roles are extended for an additional year.

Role Overview

The Senior SQL Server / Azure Database Administrator will perform advanced technical work across database administration and support, including SQL Server and Azure SQL environments, database operations, application-development support, data migration, performance monitoring, database security, availability, data warehousing, and related data administration activities.

The position is primarily remote, with candidates local to the Harrisburg, PA area preferred. Onsite attendance may be required for fingerprinting and equipment pickup. The role operates with little direct supervision of the Team Lead and works closely with developers, business stakeholders, vendors, service providers, and supporting administration teams.

Primary Responsibilities

• Provide operations support for SQL databases and database servers supporting critical production systems.
• Ensure the overall health, availability, and quality of database services.
• Perform database health checks, review performance, and provide recommendations to improve database performance.
• Migrate and upgrade SQL databases from legacy server and SQL versions to newer server and SQL versions.
• Perform data migration by designing programs to extract, cleanse, transform, load, and validate data between data sources.
• Deploy SQL database solutions within Azure and secure Azure SQL resources and data.
• Provide database design support and define, develop, and create databases based on assessed requirements.
• Meet with developers and vendors to determine requirements and provide consulting assistance on appropriate database configurations.
• Deploy and maintain database schema changes across test and production environments.
• Provide technical support for PSP Data Warehouse, Data Marts, and Power BI environments in collaboration with the Lead Power BI Administrator.
• Deploy, configure, secure, back up, and maintain Azure SQL database solutions.
• Integrate Azure SQL resources with other Azure services supporting enterprise applications and data solutions.
• Monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize Azure SQL and SQL Server database performance and availability.
• Support migration of on-premises SQL Server databases to Azure SQL.
• Design, develop, and maintain logical and physical database models based on business and technical requirements, including review and validation of data models and data dictionaries for organizational standards.
• Develop and maintain database structures, including tables, relationships, and normalization, to support data integrity, efficiency, and reduced redundancy.
• Collaborate with developers, business stakeholders, and vendors to gather requirements and recommend appropriate database architectures and configurations.
• Coordinate database backup and restore requests with the backup administration team.
• Engage in ongoing process improvement.
• Determine estimates and schedules for assigned work and resolve issues in a timely manner.
• Identify and track issues, risks, and action items.
• Coordinate with vendors and service providers to resolve technical support issues.
• Assist with coordinating software releases.
• Manage and provide status updates on work activities.
• Follow database standards and complete assigned tasks.

Required Technical Skills

• Expert-level SQL Server database administration capability.

• Foundational hands-on experience with Azure database administration.
• Foundational experience supporting data warehouse environments.

Preferred Qualifications

• Power BI Administration capability is highly desired.
• Practical experience with business systems analysis and design is desired.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft SQL high-availability capabilities, including HA / Always On, is desired.
• A 4 year college degree or equivalent technical study is preferred.
