Job Summary:

Nova Biomedical is seeking an experienced Senior/Staff Scientist to lead the technical design, development, and optimization of novel biosensors for our next-generation clinical and biopharmaceutical platforms.

As a technical expert in potentiometric and/or amperometric sensors, this individual will serve as a hands-on technical lead, driving the development of sensor architectures from initial feasibility through verification and validation. The Senior or Staff Scientist will work at the intersection of materials science, surface chemistry, electrochemistry, and advanced algorithm development to ensure sensor performance, reliability, durability, and manufacturability.

This position will collaborate closely with scientists, engineers, Manufacturing, Quality, and Regulatory partners while providing technical guidance and mentorship to junior scientists and research associates.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the technical lead for amperometric and/or potentiometric sensor development and optimization projects.
  • Lead the design, development, and optimization of novel biosensor architectures from feasibility through verification and validation.
  • Design and optimize sensors for the detection of electrolytes, metabolites, or gases in clinical biofluids and biopharmaceutical samples.
  • Apply expertise in electrochemistry, materials science, and surface chemistry to improve sensor performance and reliability.
  • Optimize sensor use life and shelf life.
  • Develop algorithms that maximize sensor performance and reduce read time.
  • Design, plan, and conduct experiments independently.
  • Analyze complex experimental data and clearly communicate findings, recommendations, and conclusions.
  • Apply statistical and computational tools to model electrochemical systems and visualize complex datasets.
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing Engineering to develop robust, scalable manufacturing processes and process controls.
  • Support the transition of new sensor technologies and manufacturing processes from development into production.
  • Partner with Regulatory and Quality teams to develop analytical verification and validation plans.
  • Ensure sensor development activities align with applicable design controls and quality system requirements.
  • Participate in or lead root-cause investigations and troubleshooting activities for new product development and sustaining engineering projects.
  • Identify technical risks and develop appropriate mitigation strategies.
  • Prepare and review technical reports, protocols, presentations, and other development documentation.
  • Provide technical mentorship and guidance to junior scientists and research associates.
  • Promote an environment focused on scientific rigor, technical excellence, collaboration, and innovation.
  • Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams to meet project timelines, technical objectives, and quality requirements.
  • Maintain current knowledge of emerging biosensor technologies, electrochemical methods, materials, fabrication processes, and analytical techniques.

Experience Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry, Electrochemistry, Materials Science, Biomedical Engineering, or a related scientific or engineering discipline required.
  • Three to five years of relevant industrial or professional experience required for the Senior Scientist III level.
  • 5 to 7+ years of relevant industrial or professional experience required for the Staff Scientist level.
  • Relevant experience developing in vitro diagnostic medical devices, particularly electrochemical sensors.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the development of potentiometric and/or amperometric sensors.
  • Experience designing and optimizing sensors for electrolytes, metabolites, gases, or related analytes.
  • Expertise using PVC, polyurethane, and silicone-based matrices in sensing applications.
  • Experience with planar sensor fabrication and/or thick-film screen printing.
  • Experience with advanced dispensing technologies and wafer-level processing methods.
  • Proven ability to independently design and conduct experiments, analyze data, interpret results, and communicate findings.
  • Experience optimizing sensor performance, use life, shelf life, reliability, and manufacturability.
  • Experience developing or applying algorithms to improve sensor performance and reduce read time.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Python, Minitab, JMP, or comparable tools used to model electrochemical systems and visualize complex datasets.
  • Familiarity with design controls under ISO 13485, ISO 9001, and FDA Quality System Regulation requirements under 21 CFR Part 820.
  • Experience supporting analytical verification and validation activities in a regulated product-development environment.
  • Strong root-cause analysis, troubleshooting, and technical problem-solving skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to prepare and present technical reports, experimental findings, and project recommendations.
  • Experience collaborating with Manufacturing Engineering, Regulatory, Quality, and other cross-functional partners.
  • Technical leadership experience preferred.
  • Experience mentoring junior scientists, research associates, or other technical team members preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead projects and collaborate across functions in a fast-paced research and development environment.
