Senior / Supervising BMS & Smart Building Engineer

Location: Charlotte, NC (Hybrid)

About the Opportunity

A nationally recognized engineering consulting firm is seeking a Senior / Supervising BMS & Smart Building Engineer to lead the design and implementation of advanced Building Management Systems (BMS), Smart Building technologies, and integrated building automation solutions for some of the nation's most complex facilities.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced controls and smart building professional to help expand a growing regional practice while collaborating with multidisciplinary engineering teams on innovative projects across healthcare, mission critical, life sciences, commercial, higher education, aviation, and advanced manufacturing markets.

The ideal candidate is passionate about intelligent buildings, digital transformation, IoT technologies, and building analytics, with the ability to lead projects, mentor engineers, and build lasting client relationships.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and implementation of Building Management Systems (BMS), Building Automation Systems (BAS), EPMS, DCIM, SCADA, and Smart Building technologies.
  • Develop control system drawings, specifications, sequences of operation, and design calculations.
  • Manage multiple controls and smart building projects from concept through construction and commissioning.
  • Coordinate closely with mechanical, electrical, plumbing, ICT, and low-voltage engineering teams.
  • Evaluate and recommend best-in-class building automation and controls solutions.
  • Support owner, architect, contractor, and vendor meetings throughout all project phases.
  • Review contractor submittals, respond to RFIs, and provide construction administration support.
  • Assist clients with vendor evaluations, procurement strategies, and technology implementation.
  • Develop and maintain BMS standards, design guidelines, and quality control procedures.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop junior engineers and controls specialists.
  • Support hiring initiatives and help grow the regional smart buildings practice.
  • Participate in project pursuits, client presentations, and business development activities.
  • Manage project budgets, schedules, staffing, and overall project financial performance.
  • Stay current with emerging Smart Building technologies, IoT platforms, digital twins, cloud-based analytics, cybersecurity, and intelligent building trends.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or a related technical discipline preferred.
  • 7–12+ years of experience designing, implementing, or consulting on Building Automation Systems (BAS), Building Management Systems (BMS), or Smart Building technologies.
  • Strong knowledge of HVAC controls, electrical instrumentation, and building sequences of operation.
  • Experience with one or more of the following platforms:
    • Siemens
    • Johnson Controls (Metasys)
    • Schneider Electric
    • Honeywell
    • Tridium Niagara
    • Delta Controls
    • Distech Controls
    • Automated Logic
  • Experience with EPMS, DCIM, SCADA, or integrated controls systems.
  • Understanding of converged IT/OT infrastructure, IoT devices, BACnet, Modbus, LonWorks, MQTT, and smart building integration.
  • Familiarity with building analytics platforms, fault detection and diagnostics (FDD), dashboards, and energy optimization software.
  • Ability to coordinate multidisciplinary engineering teams and manage complex technical projects.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and client relationship skills.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred but not required.
  • Active participation in organizations such as ASHRAE, CABA, or similar industry groups is a plus.
