The Senior Surveyor I or above - Corporate Class role is a developmental assignment intended to broaden the incumbent's understanding of classification, statutory, and organizational processes across a range of operational settings. The position provides meaningful exposure to ABS operations and the global maritime regulatory environment, with opportunities to collaborate with Assistant Chief Surveyors, the Chief Surveyor, Principal Surveyors-in-Charge, clients, regulatory authorities, IACS members, and other industry stakeholders.

What You Will Do:
  • Performs assigned responsibilities within the ABS Corporate Classification function, supporting technical consistency, governance, and alignment across operational regions, as applicable.
  • Collaborates with Assistant Chief Surveyors, the Chief Surveyor, Principal Surveyors-in-Charge, clients, regulatory authorities, and industry counterparts on classification and statutory matters.
  • Supports investigative and review activities related to technical, operational, and procedural issues, including research, analysis, documentation, and follow-up actions.
  • Contributes to the development, evaluation, and continuous improvement of classification-related processes, procedures, guidance, and internal governance documents.
  • Conducts statutory reviews of IMO requirements and flag Administration updates to evaluate impacts on ABS policies, Process Instructions, and related internal documentation.
  • Supports the revision and maintenance of Process Instructions and contributes to the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of policies associated with statutory and classification activities.
  • Monitors regulatory and industry developments to help ensure internal procedures and guidance remain aligned with current statutory, classification, and flag-state requirements.
What You Will Need:

Education & Experience
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience as a Surveyor II; or
  • Demonstrated understanding of ABS strategic technical positioning within the applicable sector of the marine industry; or
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of experience in an engineering or survey capacity with an IACS member Classification Society.
  • Degree or equivalent qualification from a tertiary institution in a relevant field of engineering or physical science, based on a minimum two-year program; or
  • Qualification from a marine or nautical institution, together with relevant seagoing experience as a certificated ship officer; and
  • Proficiency in the English language commensurate with the scope of statutory certification and services, and appropriate for the duties to be assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Appropriate certification and/or licenses in areas of specialization may be required .
  • Ability to develop working knowledge, of ABS Rules, Guides, statutory regulations, applicable instructions, and the ABS Employee Safety Policy.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering plans, with a sound understanding of shipbuilding practices and vessel operations.
  • Ability to perform surveys and document results in the prescribed format.
  • Proficiency with computer programs and software applications relevant to assigned responsibilities.
  • Ability to work effectively across technical interfaces and contribute to team-based projects.
  • Knowledge of shipboard engineering systems and machinery.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey technical information related to assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to identify issues and recommend practical solutions.
  • Demonstrated responsiveness to internal and external customers.
  • Ability to work effectively with others in a collaborative environment.
  • Working knowledge of the ABS Health, Safety, Quality, and Environmental Management System.
Reporting Relationships:

Reports to the Assistant Chief Surveyor, Corporate Class.
