Kforce has a client who is seeking a Senior Technician Relay Engineer in Scottsdale, AZ. This is a hands-on technical role focused on building, testing, and maintaining the protection and control systems that keep the electric grid operating safely and reliably. Summary: The job is about working directly in substations and field environments to ensure protective relay systems and automation equipment are installed correctly, function properly, and respond accurately during faults or outages. Depending on the team (commissioning/testing vs. construction), the role blends fieldwork, troubleshooting, and project execution. Day-to-day, this person would:
  • Program and test protective relays and control devices to ensure they operate correctly under fault conditions
  • Commission new substation equipment, verifying wiring, communications, and system logic before energization
  • Use specialized equipment to simulate electrical faults and validate system performance
  • Perform maintenance and troubleshooting on relay systems and automation devices
  • Install and wire control panels and substation equipment as part of construction projects
  • Support outage coordination and on-site project execution, ensuring work is completed safely and on schedule
  • Review and verify engineering drawings and installation quality
  • Document all testing and commissioning work for compliance and asset tracking
This role is very much in the field where you're working around energized equipment, solving real-time problems, and ensuring critical infrastructure operates correctly.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as a Relay Technician 2 or 6 years related experience required for the Senior Technician level
  • Technician 2, minimum of 4 years of experience, completion of four-year apprenticeship or training program, or equivalent training
  • Experience in protective relays, substation systems, or electrical fieldwork
  • Strong understanding of electrical theory and testing practices
  • Ability to read schematics, troubleshoot issues, and work with test equipment
  • Willingness to work overtime, respond to outages, and be in field environments

The pay range is the lowest to highest compensation we reasonably in good faith believe we would pay at posting for this role. We may ultimately pay more or less than this range. Employee pay is based on factors like relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, location, performance, union contract and business needs. This range may be modified in the future.

We offer comprehensive benefits including medical/dental/vision insurance, HSA, FSA, 401(k), and life, disability & ADD insurance to eligible employees. Salaried personnel receive paid time off. Hourly employees are not eligible for paid time off unless required by law. Hourly employees on a Service Contract Act project are eligible for paid sick leave.

Note: Pay is not considered compensation until it is earned, vested and determinable. The amount and availability of any compensation remains in Kforce's sole discretion unless and until paid and may be modified in its discretion consistent with the law.

This job is not eligible for bonuses, incentives or commissions.
