The LA County Board of Supervisors has unanimously ratified a Proclamation of Local Emergency in response to the windstorms and wildfires(Download PDF reader), including the Palisades and Eaton Fires, that have devastated communities across the County. We are looking for qualified and passionate individuals to assist the County in mobilizing resources and support needed to help our residents recover and rebuild. The Los Angeles County Fire Department is seeking qualified candidates to fill emergency Senior Typist Clerk vacancies related to this unprecedented natural disaster.

Under the emergency order, applicants who meet the requirements may be hired for an initial period of up to 90 days, with an opportunity for permanent County employment.

During your initial work period, you will be assessed on your work performance. This assessment will be weighted 100%.

Those who successfully pass the assessment will be considered for permanent appointment to Senior Typist Clerk.

Essential Job Functions

  • Types and processes court orders, minutes, petitions, and other legal documents requiring the analysis ofcomplex source material and a thorough familiarity with the various legal codes in order to obtain the necessarydata.

  • Answers questions that require such things as searching for and abstracting technical data and detailedexplanation of laws, policies, or procedures, checks non-routine applications, collects variable fees, etc., andrefers only unusual inquiries to his immediate superior.

  • Checks legal documents such as writs, petitions, warrants, purchase orders, claims and bonds for form, validity,and compliance with legal requirements in cases requiring the application of highly specialized knowledge andthe resolution of debatable points, and where a mistake in judgment may entail serious consequences.

  • Makes statistical computations and analyses, estimates of fees, etc., where specialized knowledge of laws,policies, and procedures are involved to an unusual degree, as in the recording of documents, propertyassessments, and tax collections.

  • Advises employees on problems within his jurisdiction, and on his own initiative, makes such decisions as arepermissible.

  • Reviews for accuracy and conformity to established procedures the work of others performing preliminaryoperations in the course of the flow of work.

  • Makes final check of permits, authorizations, etc., without higher level review.

  • Prepares correspondence requiring the application of highly specialized knowledge and discrimination in the selection of data or interpretation of laws, rules, or policies.

  • May supervise a small section or unit engaged in related work where responsibility for supervision issubordinate to the performance of the highly specialized clerical work.

  • May routinely access such office equipment as video display terminals, word processors, or personal computersto input data, perform computations, or produce documents not requiring the formatting or programming of suchequipment.

REQUIREMENTS TO QUALIFY:

Three years' office clerical experience involving typewriting, one year of which must have been in a specialized* or supervisory capacity.

Typewriting skill requirement: Ability to type at the rate of 40 net words per minute.

The following candidates are NOT required to take the Department of Human Resources typing test:

  • Those candidates who currently hold or have held a typing position with the required net words per minute in the service of the County of Los Angeles.

  • Applicants who have met the typing requirement in another Los Angeles County department must attach a copy of their typing certificate to their application or send to Fire-Examination@fire.lacounty.gov within seven (7) days of the end of the filing period.

  • Those who have applied and passed with the required net words per minute on the "TYPING TEST - SCORE-BANKING ONLY" exam. Passing scores on record with the Department of Human Resources will be transferred automatically.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION:

  • Specialized clerical capacity means experience performing specialized clerical duties in a defined subject matter area with continuing responsibility for projects, questions, or problems that arise within an area of a program or functional specialty. This requires knowledge of rules, regulations, and other guidelines relating to completing assignments in the program area assigned. Such experience is gained at the level of Los Angeles Countys class of Intermediate Clerk, Intermediate Typist-Clerk, or higher.

Supervisory capacity means experience includes responsibility for planning, assigning and reviewing the work of staff, evaluating employee performance, participating in interviewing and selecting new staff, and performance management. Examples of specialized capacity office clerical work include: Cultural and Arts; Compliance and Safety; Consulting Advisory Services; Customer Service; Education Support; Environmental and Sustainability; Financial; Government and Public Administration; Healthcare; Hospitality and Event Management; Human Resources; IT and Support; Legal; Library; Manufacturing and Production; Marketing and Communications; Nonprofit; Public Relations Media Management; Quality Assurance; Real Estate; Research and Development; Supply Chain and Logistics, similar industries.

PHYSICAL CLASS:

Physical Class II - Light: This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort that may include occasional light lifting to a 10-pound limit and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.

EXAM CONTENT:

During your initial work period, the appointing department will evaluate your performance. Those who achieve a passing score on this evaluation will be considered for permanent appointment.
