Senior Veterinary Technician (V17) $31.56

Position Summary

This position is for a senior veterinary technician who has experience working with various species of large and small animals. The veterinary technician will be responsible for daily health checks, administering medications through various routes, performing and monitoring anesthesia, and assisting staff veterinarians, including following directions given by the department veterinarians.

The incumbent will work independently and in teams in overall management of the ULAR animal colonies, as well as maintain work areas and provide support for research personnel. They will provide preventive health and perioperative care with accompanying record keeping. They will provide instruction to research technicians and students as required. They will be involved in the planning, executing, and analyzing data from ULAR-generated research projects. They will perform other duties as assigned.

Essential Functions of Position

Surgical suite and support area:

  • Provide pre-, peri-, and post-operative animal care with associated husbandry
  • Purchase and maintenance of drugs, supplies and equipment
  • Surgery setup including disinfection and autoclaving of supplies, equipment and rooms
  • Proper record keeping including SOPs, drug usage, and medical records
  • Maintenance of surgery O.R.s, procedure rooms and prep areas
  • Proper medical waste disposal and final disposition of animals
  • Responsible for assigning fees and chargebacks for all Veterinary Service Requests

Preventive Health:

  • Rodent animal health surveillance and record keeping
  • Rodent and non-rodent physical examinations and record keeping
  • Special treatments and post-operative care
  • Environmental and equipment monitoring, e.g. anesthesia machines, autoclaves

Training (research and ULAR staff):

  • Proper animal oversight, including general physical exams and identification of sick or injured animals.
  • Anesthesia, rodent and non-rodent
  • Dosing and blood collection techniques
  • Zoonotics, allergies, and biohazards

Technical Support:

  • Treatment regimens
  • Tissue collection for laboratory testing
  • Support ULAR research projects
  • Perform necropsy procedures and prepare specimens
  • Assist ULAR husbandry as required in special situations or with biohazards
  • Assist in writing documents for IACUC, USDA, AAALAC and SOPs
  • Assist with special surgery techniques and/or post-operative care

Required Education and Experience

Associates degree in life science or related discipline and at least one year experience as a veterinary technician or related experience (i.e., research colony maintenance, veterinary technician assistant, etc.). An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Required Skills and Abilities

Ability to work on an on-call rotating schedule for weekends and holidays.

Demonstrated proficiency with anesthesia monitoring, anesthesia machines, ventilators/respirators, autoclaves, and surgical tools.

Ability to work in an environment containing laboratory animals that may be infected with biohazardous organisms, carcinogens, and other potentially harmful agents. Animals may also harbor naturally occurring infectious agents.

Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with others, understanding that organization and team goals may take precedence over individual goals.

Ability to maintain a proficient level of technical and professional skills and knowledge in job-related areas.

Ability to communicate quickly and effectively in verbal and written forms.

Preferred

Certification as a Veterinary Technician (CVT, LVT, RVT, etc.)

AALAS Certification

Bachelor's degree in Biological Science or Veterinary Technology

Experience with Large Animal Anesthesia

Experience with Surgical Support

This position will be on-site.
