The Senior Volunteer Experience Specialist manages volunteer engagement across the Mission by stewarding volunteers and volunteer groups, enhancing guest services, building program capacity, and offsetting costs through strategic volunteer utilization. They also equip Mission staff with effective volunteer management systems, training, and best practices. This role serves as a key liaison and resource for volunteer supervision, conflict resolution, risk mitigation, and program support—ensuring volunteers are well-prepared to provide meaningful service to guests and staff and that staff are equipped and supported to manage volunteer resources efficiently and effectively.  This position will be in office a minimum of 3 days per week.

Scheduled: Monday – Friday with occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays

Target starting pay: $37.31 per hour

 

How you will serve 

•                    Manage vested volunteers, academic interns, and volunteer groups throughout the Mission: (50–60%)

o   Lead recruitment, selection, onboarding, training, and placement of volunteers and interns.

o   Partner with site directors and program leaders to identify volunteer needs, build program capacity, resolve concerns, and ensure effective volunteer supervision.

o   Deepen connection to the Mission for volunteers, churches, and other organizations through meaningful engagement, recognition, and service opportunities.

o   Train and equip staff to manage volunteers effectively. Support staff to ensure consistent volunteer performance, especially in regard to volunteer supervision, recognition, coaching, and removal when needed.

o   Curate multi-day custom group opportunities to garner financial donations, on-ramp potential partner organizations, and deepen church engagement.

o   Develop and steward site-specific volunteer operations committees that improve communication, integrate volunteers into site culture, mitigate conflict, and expand service impact.

o   Collaborate with Program Directors and Senior Staff to create productive unpaid internships and to ensure fulfillment of internship requirements.

o   Manage robust BAM (Bring-a-Meal) and External Feeding programs.

o   This position will require some shift flexibility to cover evening, weekend, and holiday work.

•                    Use the volunteer management system to drive effective operations: (20–30%)

o   Partner with Community Engagement Director, program staff, and Marketing to optimize volunteer opportunity postings.

o   Access and review data and reports to inform decisions, set goals, and strengthen volunteer engagement strategies.

o   Troubleshoot complex system issues for staff and volunteers and implement new workflows and capabilities.

o   Track and report on cost savings due to groups providing meals and other essential services to the Mission.

•                    Create and deliver volunteer training initiatives: (5–10%)

o   Teach volunteer training classes online or in person.

o   Revise existing curriculum and develop new training content as needs emerge.

•                    Advance volunteer promotion, communication, and recognition: (5–10%)

o   Plan and promote volunteer events, secure low- or no-cost partner support, and encourage strong attendance.

o   Create newsletters, social media content, and other outward-facing communications that celebrate volunteer impact and inspire engagement.

o   Think strategically and creatively to identify new promotional opportunities.

o   Build meaningful, low-cost recognition strategies, including milestone pins and regular appreciation touchpoints.

o   Represent the Mission clearly and compellingly to schools, churches, businesses, service groups, and community audiences.

o   Work closely with churches and other organizations to plan, promote, and manage group opportunities

•                    Strengthen cross-team collaboration:

o   Consistently interact with program staff and leadership to utilize volunteers effectively and efficiently in the work of the Mission.

o   Work closely with the Church Partnership Team to mobilize churches in service to the Mission and neighbors experiencing homelessness.

o   Collaborate with the Community Engagement Director and Senior Leadership on strategic decisions, using volunteer data to guide action.

o   Strategize with the Development Team to steward donors through volunteer opportunities, site tours, and shared service experiences.

o   Participate in organizational meetings, training, and initiatives as required.

•                    Perform other duties assigned to support the Mission’s success. 

 

How you qualify 

•                    Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred. A combination of education and experience may be substituted.

•                    5+ years of experience in customer service and stewarding relationships with key partners.

•                    3+ years of experience managing volunteer engagement initiatives.

•                    1+ years of experience using a CRM or database to create data-driven strategies. Experience with volunteer management software, a plus.

•                    Experience with project management, strategic planning, or capacity building a plus.

•                    Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit for extended periods of time in a temperature-controlled environment. Occasionally you will stand, balance, twist, stoop, kneel and reach with hands/arms. Occasionally lifts up to 30 pounds and walks, use stairways to climb multiple floors within the company. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, distance vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
