What You Will Do

The Alpha Wing Team at Los Alamos National Laboratory are seeking outstanding candidates for a Scientist 3 position to work on one of our many complex and value-added projects. The Alpha Wing is a premier radioactive facility at LANL that is responsible for conducting research on a wide variety of radionucleotides for numerous programs. The Alpha Wing also supports the Pit Manufacturing program, which mission includes monitoring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile and conducting advanced research in numerous areas related to national security. Our research has made major impacts into how LANL operations and the greater community think about how Pu and its related nucleotides can be processed. This includes manufacturing and surveillance processes that are conducted at the nation's plutonium center of excellence, TA-55, PF-4.

Recently, the Alpha Wing has been tasked with assisting the Pit Manufacturing mission through chemical analysis of samples that are generated in the manufacturing plant. This Scientist 3 position offers a broad range of challenges including: rigorous R&D for developing Pu separation strategies, the planning and execution of analytical work, the creation and maintenance of rigorous procedures, and the approval and dissemination of analytical reports to program (Material Recycle and Recovery) and customer (Plutonium Supply and Disposition) organizations.

Responsibilities include the following:
  • Leads in communicating results of technical R&D, including (but not limited to) publications, presentations, reports, intellectual property, technical products, etc.
  • Influences organizational, project, and program strategies and directions. Leads technical decision-making at task level within a project. Makes decisions and/or recommendations that influence the achievement of key programmatic objectives. May contribute to the development of technical standards.
  • Defines deliverables at project or major task level.
  • Safety and security are a primary responsibility for all Laboratory employees. Assures safety and security compliance, maintains required safety and security training, and makes safety and security an integral part of every task, including taking the necessary steps to stop work if continuing the job is unsafe or compromises security.
  • Lead projects and contributes to larger team efforts.
  • Makes scientific judgements dictating the project direction.
  • Determine and ensure the completion of objectives and milestones of multiple projects.
  • Mentor staff, post-doctoral researchers, and students in technical and professional growth.
  • Contributes to medium to large scale proposals and to programmatic mission deliverables.
