Service Engineer
Position Overview
The Service Engineer will provide on-site technical support, installation, commissioning and preventative maintenance for CNC machines and related equipment. Acting as the primary field contact for customers, this role focuses on minimizing downtime through rapid troubleshooting, repairs and continuous improvement of service processes. The successful candidate combines strong mechanical and electrical skills with excellent customer communication and a commitment to safety and quality.
Key Responsibilities
- Respond to customer service calls and perform on-site diagnostics, repair and preventive maintenance of CNC machines and ancillary equipment.
- Install, commission and configure new machines, ensuring correct integration with customer systems and compliance with specifications.
- Troubleshoot electrical, mechanical and control system faults including CNC controllers (e.g., Fanuc, Siemens, Heidenhain), PLCs and servo drives.
- Perform routine inspections, calibrations and adjustments to maintain machine accuracy and reliability.
- Provide clear technical documentation including service reports, spare parts recommendations and maintenance schedules.
- Train customer personnel on safe operation, routine maintenance and basic troubleshooting procedures.
- Coordinate with engineering, parts and sales teams to deliver timely solutions and improvements.
- Manage spare parts inventory for assigned territory and advise on recommended spare holdings to reduce downtime.
- Adhere to company safety policies and site safety requirements while working at customer locations.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives by identifying recurring issues and proposing design or process improvements.
Qualifications
- 3+ years of field service or maintenance experience on CNC machines, industrial equipment, or manufacturing systems.
- Practical knowledge of CNC controls (Fanuc, Siemens, Heidenhain) and PLC troubleshooting and ladder logic.
- Strong mechanical, electrical and electronics troubleshooting skills including hydraulics, pneumatics and servo systems.
- Experience with installation, commissioning and preventive maintenance procedures for machine tools.
- Excellent customer-facing communication skills and the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical personnel.
- Valid drivers license and willingness to travel regularly, including overnight stays as required.
- Ability to read mechanical and electrical schematics, wiring diagrams and service manuals.
- Proven ability to work independently in the field and collaborate with cross-functional teams.
- Preferred: welding/fabrication skills, electrical safety certification, experience with CAD drawings and machine retrofits.
