Responsible for daily operations, staff, performance improvement, compliance with accreditation standards, budget and quality outcomes.

Manage and direct the daily operation of assigned areas and staff. Develop, implement, maintain and enforce departmental programs, policies, procedures and protocols. Ensure and maintain required documentation for compliance with safety, environmental and infection control standards and with local, state and federal regulations. Monitor compliance with standards, identify variances or inabilities to meet established targets and implement action to ensure that targets are met.

7. Daily Work Schedules are completed and available 2 weeks in advance to the staff on X-drive or posted. FML/PTO requests are maintained and updated weekly.

8. Maintain competencies as needed to meet operational needs.

9. Evaluates and recommends contractual agreements for equipment, reagents, and maintenance selection/replacement pricing.

10. Develops and implements Pathology Center departmental policies and procedures as well as laboratory and organizational strategic planning.

11. Participates in, or ensures preparedness for, CAP and other regulatory inspections both onsite and offsite.

12. Participates in mandatory in-services and/or CE programs as mandated by policies and procedures and/or external agencies and as directed by laboratory and hospital leadership.

Education

• Bachelors of Science Degree required in Medical Laboratory Science (MLS), or Clinical Laboratory Science (CLS), or Medical Technology (MT); or
• Bachelors of Science Degree with a Certificate from a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) accredited MLS/MT/CLS Program or
• Bachelors of Science degree required in approved Histotechnician (HT) / Histotechnologist (HTL) certification program.
• American Society Clinical for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) registration is required.
• Specialty Certification is preferred.
• Current College of American Pathologists (CAP) inspector competency required within 6 months of hire (Gen Lab, and others as applicable to areas of expertise and oversight).

Experience

• Minimum of 5 years laboratory experience including 3 years supervisory experience required.

License/Certifications

• Registered by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel (NCA).
• Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Scientist (MT/MLS), Histotechnician/Histotechnologist (HT/HTL), Phlebotomy Technician (PBT), Cytotechnologist (CT), Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT)

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

• Able to organize and perform multiple tasks, problem-solve and prioritize work assignments.
• Advanced interpersonal relationship and customer service skills required to effectively communicate with staff, physicians, administrators, patients, visitors and vendors.
• Ability to mentor, supervise, delegate and evaluate.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills for positive interaction with staff and customers required.
• Ability to effectively communicate with staff, applicants, all levels of hospital/health system/clinic staff and individuals external to the organization.
• Knowledge and experience of College of American Pathologists (CAP), Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), as well as The Joint Commission accreditation standards required.
• Knowledge of Laboratory laws, regulations, guidelines and professional standards required.
• Knowledge of Laboratory billing and coding laws and regulations preferred.
• Skilled in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook required.
• Able to read, write, and comprehend various written reports and documents required.
• Basic math skills required.
• Able to read, write, and carry out oral and written instructions with accuracy and efficiency required.
