This position is for Second Shift, 1:00 pm to 11:00 pm
Purpose of Position:
To plan, perform, and/or supervise construction and/or maintenance of overhead and/or underground distribution lines. To have knowledge in and be responsible for areas that are more technical. Such as voltage recorders, electronic devices, and station equipment, any technology that will help system reliability. Safety shall not be compromised for the purpose of this position.

- High school diploma, GED, or equivalency required.
- Must be a First Class Line Technician
- Valid Class A Florida Commercial Driver License or must have knowledge and skills to obtain said license within 90 days of employment.
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle with automatic or manual transmission.
- Ability to communicate on a two-way radio system.
- Ability to perform job tasks involving bending, stooping, climbing, and lifting heavy objects. Sufficient hearing and vision to perform all job tasks. Impaired hearing and/or vision must not present a safety hazard to the employee, other employees, and/or the general public.
- Ability to stand for prolonged periods.
- Manual dexterity and mechanical ability to use hand tools such as pliers, screwdrivers, wrenches, etc.
- Ability to climb poles with pole climbers.
Working Conditions:
Outside work in various weather conditions including occasional extreme weather conditions. Regular work hours with some overtime and extended work days due to weather-created outage or emergencies. Some risks are due to unrestrained pets. Potential exposure to high voltage power lines. Will individually or with assistance pull or use force regularly for materials, tools, and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds, frequently pull or use force up to 50 pounds, and occasionally pull and use force up to 100 pounds. Reaching and lifting overhead is required. The job requires standing, crawling, climbing, bending, pulling, and reaching a majority of the time.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
The following are essential responsibilities of this position and do not include marginal functions that are incidental to the performance of the fundamental job duties. The scope and duties of this position may change or be temporarily altered based on the business needs of Peace River Electric Cooperative. The basic requirement of every position is to perform all tasks as assigned by your supervisor.
- The most essential job function of the position is safety and attitude that includes the following: a) getting along with co-workers, b) cooperating with co-workers, c) responding politely to customers, d) working as a team member, e) functioning under intense time pressure, f) responding in a positive manner to supervision.
A. Organization
- Performance Appraisal: Appraises periodically the performance of personnel assigned under personal supervision and reviews such appraisal with the Operations Supervisor.
- Training: Sees that personnel under personal supervision are thoroughly trained in accordance with the qualifications and requirements of their position. Participates in safety programs, promotes safe working habits, and encourages the use of protective equipment through coaching and counseling of assigned personnel. Trains personnel on the job concerning safety.
B. Operations
1. Planning
- Work Flow: Plans a daily work schedule which will utilize the employees, materials, and transportation as effectively as possible, but which permits changes in daily work schedule when required because of emergency.
- Work Program: Determines the requirement of tools, equipment, and materials needed for all types of jobs.
- Equipment & Tools: Determines the need for repair of equipment and replacement of tools and submits requisitions for supplies and work equipment for crew operation to the department supervisor.
- Directing: Directs the activities of the crew that he/she is supervising to ensure that all responsibilities, authorities, and relationships are understood, accepted, and performed.
Ensures that all personnel are informed whether the conductor is energized or de-energized and sees that they follow the best safety practices, including the use of rubber gloves, hard hats, and grounds, as in the safety manual.
- Ensures that the truck, tools, and working equipment assigned are properly used and kept in good working condition.
- Directs compliance with all rules, regulations, and safe practices in the operation of motor vehicles.
- Directs the loading and hauling of materials and poles needed for scheduled activities.
3. Performs Personally
- Knows the proper and safe practices when setting poles for digging holes.
- Receives clearance to energize or to temporarily de-energize lines, and determines compliance with all safety precautions when opening and closing energized lines.
- Knows the hazards that exist in the form of falls, electric shock, electric flash, falling objects, and traffic, and is familiar with the use of protective and safety equipment and at all times follows the best practices as set forth in the Cooperative Safety Manual.
- Becomes trained and certified to perform first aid, pole top rescue, and CPR.
- Retires lines from service when directed, submitting reports to his/her supervisor of all materials retired and time reports.
- Submits construction material tickets, line sketches, or map references for engineers when required.
- Remains constantly alert and investigates and make required repairs when possible on line clearance and other discrepancies of transmission and distribution, secondary and service line to see that they meet RUS code requirements, and report these so they can be handled.
- Complies with all traffic laws, Cooperative safety rules and regulations, and safe practices while operating the vehicle assigned; should be at all times on the lookout for the safety of the vehicle, its occupants, and its load.
- Personally inspects all protective and safety equipment and reports any inadequacy.
- Immediately reports all accidents or sicknesses of crew personnel.
- Communicates on two-way radio as necessary, following FCC rules and company procedures.
- Ensures that an adequate supply of safety equipment and maintenance material is maintained and kept in good condition on the vehicle assigned.
- Actively participates in on-the-job training and safety programs and becomes knowledgeable of Cooperative safety rules and practices.
- Advises Member Services Department of any known need for promotional or public relations services.
- Keeps informed of all Cooperative policies and procedures and in turn informs consumers and helpers of the policies and procedures, and any changes thereof as required or requested.
- Installs or changes line transformers, line and station oil circuit reclosers, and related equipment.
- Installs and connects voltage regulators, changes taps, and regulates voltage on transformers.
- Makes substation installation and performs required work for substation maintenance as directed, under direct supervision.
- Answers trouble calls promptly. During normal working hours remain in a working posture to answer emergency outage calls rapidly unless otherwise directed.
- Cuts right-of-way as required or directed.
- Constructs, removes, or moves poles, conductors, and equipment as a separate crew or as a part of a larger crew under the supervision of a Line Supervisor.
- Observe the performance of any personnel assigned to make sure they are following an effective work procedure and observing safe practices; assume obligation for coaching helpers; prepares to advise supervisor during performance appraisals.
- Connects and disconnects meters as required or directed.
- Performs underground locating periodically.
- Performs such other duties as required or directed.
