Primary Objective

To perform various types of manual labor, semi-skilled, or skilled work in the maintenance of the Citys municipal buildings, parks, right of way, streets, and storm sewers.

Examples of Duties

  • Maintenance and repair of building structure, exterior and envelope
  • Inspect, perform routine maintenance and repair of building mechanical systems
  • Maintenance and repair of doors, door hardware and closers
  • Maintenance and repair of plumbing systems and related fixtures (faucets, flush valves, drains)
  • Report deficiencies in building systems and components to supervisor as appropriate
  • Maintains a clean and organized shop and monitors and cleans building mechanical areas
  • Snow removal from stairs, doorway, and sidewalks using shovels and powered equipment
  • Maintenance and repair of flooring of all kinds (wood, tile, carpet, and stone)
  • Remodels including wall demolition, construction, flooring, and painting
  • Installation and repair of modular office furniture
  • Operates, inspects, and maintains equipment and tools utilized by the Maintenance Division as assigned. Provide routine service maintenance where needed (grease, oil, gas, etc.). Keeps shop area free of obstacles and in state of orderliness
  • Performs city cemetery maintenance, landscaping, construction, and repair work. Provide assistance to service attendants, mortuary directors, and families as needed. Install and maintain grave markers and monuments
  • When directed, assists in winter and summer maintenance duties in any of the five sections of the Public Works Maintenance Divisions and/or any other Public Works Departments
  • Keeps assigned supervisor informed of important developments concerning assigned functions
  • Responsible to work overtime, shift changes, and be on call as necessary or assigned
  • When directed, coordinates with City vendors and contractors
  • Adheres to and keeps current on safety rules and procedures, and any work rules and policies that pertain to the Public Works Maintenance Division
  • Performs job responsibilities in climatic extremes, in confined spaces, and/or from aerial lift equipment
  • Demonstrates positive and professional attitude toward job assignments and tasks to be performed
  • Demonstrates personal initiative and effective use of City resources, time, and seasonal staff to provide excellent service to the public
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as apparent or assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES REQUIRED

  • Good mechanical aptitude - ability to readily learn to operate small hand tools and minor equipment such as saws, trimmers, riding mowers, and hydraulic, electrical, pneumatic equipment
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow written and oral instructions including safety rules
  • Ability to perform routine repair and maintenance tasks
  • Ability to work independently with a minimum of supervision
  • Ability to work overtime, shift changes, including evenings and weekends, holidays and be on call as necessary or assigned

Minimum/Desirable Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • One year of related experience
  • Possess a valid drivers license
  • Possess a valid Minnesota Special Boiler License within six months of employment and maintain it for the duration of employment
  • Possess basic computer skills

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  • A valid 2nd Class Minnesota Boilers License
  • A valid Minnesota Commercial Class A or B drivers license with air brake and tanker endorsements
  • Vocational training in building trades or heating and air conditioning (HVAC)
  • Experience, within the last five years, in building trades or maintenance work
  • Experience utilizing a tablet or personal computer with general word processing, spreadsheet, internet, and email functions
  • Experience with work order management software (CMMS) and/or building controls automation software
  • Ability to speak a second language, in addition to English that has a recognized presence in the community. (Spanish, Somali, Vietnamese, Chinese Mandarin, Cambodian, etc.)

Anticipated Hiring Range: $33.15 - $35.85 Hourly

2026 Full Salary Range: $33.15 - $45.36 Hourly
