SEWAGE PLANT MAINTENANCE WORKER
(Village of Herkimer)
Wage: $23.36 per hour
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
Cleans, repairs and maintains sewage plant equipment; does related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
This is skilled work involving cleaning, regular maintenance and simple repairs to pumps, motors and related sewage plant equipment. Responsibilities also include inspection and cleaning of elements of the sewage collection system. The work is performed under the general supervision of the Sewage Treatment Plant Operator. Supervision of others is limited to occasional crew chief assignments.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Illustrative only)
Assists in the operation of pumps, motors, compressors and other sewage plant machinery and equipment;
Adjusts and regulates pump operations according to the needs of various jobs;
Operates a centrifuge for mixing chemicals and disposing of sludge cake as needed;
Lubricates and maintains motors and pumps;
Changes pulley belts, couplings and impellers;
Operates a dump truck and performs minor maintenance and repairs on motor vehicles;
Operates a hydraulic sewer cleaner and manually clears debris from catch basins and manholes;
Carries out a variety of cleaning and custodial tasks on plant buildings and grounds.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Good knowledge of operation and maintenance of pumps and motors and other sewage plant machinery and equipment; good knowledge of the use of basic hand and power tools related to the work; working knowledge of sewage plant operation; working knowledge of electrical wiring and circuitry; ability to work from diagrams, plans and rough sketches; ability to perform heavy manual labor; ability to operate motor equipment; mechanical aptitude; physical condition suitable to the demands of the position.
ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
One year of experience in the operation and maintenance of pumps and small motors; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ACCEPTANCE OF APPLICATIONS:
Possession of an appropriate New York State drivers license.
