    Sewing Operator - Operate or tend sewing machines to join, reinforce, decorate, or perform related sewing operations in the manufacture of our products.

    Responsibilities :

    • Sews materials by hand and/or sewing machine, to join, gather, reinforce, or decorate materials or fabricated articles
    • Uses specialized automatic or semi-automatic sewing equipment and other equipment as required to fabricate product.
    • Cuts materials, according to specifications, cuts excess material or thread from finished product, using blade, scissors, or hot knife
    • Positions and marks patterns on materials to prepare for sewing, folds or fits together materials to prepare for machine sewing or hand sewing
    • Positions materials through feed rollers, guides, and maneuvers under sewing machine presser foot and needle during operation
    • Mounts attachments, changes needles, threads machine through guides, sets up bobbin and adjusts machine guides according to specifications
    • Monitors machine operation to detect problems, such as defective stitching, breaks in thread, or machine malfunction
    • Examines and measures finished articles to verify conformance to standards, using ruler.
    • Responsible for the quality and accuracy of the product fabrication according to the work instructions and/or drawing
    • Responsible to adhere to the current General Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) for all products

    Requirements:

    • Able to work on government contracts directly or access shared data resources (authorized to work in the U.S.)
    • High school diploma or equivalent, e.g. GED
    • Able to effectively communicate in English (read, write, speak)
    • Knowledgeable of basic math and English measurement, measurements can be as small as 1/32 nd (versus metric)
    • Demonstrated communication and team collaboration skills
    • Basic sewing skills and ability to successfully pass ILC Dover sewing aptitude evaluation

    Core Competencies:

    • A formal skill evaluation of aptitude is required. Time in position is not necessarily a factor in promotion to the next level.

    Sewing Operator 1:

    • Must fulfill all the Qualifications noted above
    • Able to manage basic sewing tasks; may require guidance and assistance.
    • Must complete a skills evaluation period to determine skill level going forward; up to 12 months in a training period is possible.

    Sewing Operator 2:

    • Must fulfill all the minimum qualifications and Sewing Operator 1 qualifications noted above
    • Ability to follow a pattern; foundational sewing skills and experience with industrial sewing with a demonstrated aptitude to advance.
    • Able to manage increasingly complex sewing tasks with little to no assistance; qualified on multiple products/assemblies.

    Sewing Operator 3:

    • Must fulfill all the minimum qualifications and the Sewing Operator 2 qualifications noted above.
    • Sewing requires fully developed skills to include pattern & blueprint reading; the ability to adjust pattern or develop patterns with minimal instruction.
    • Able to manage increasingly complex sewing tasks with no assistance, on multiple products/assemblies; may qualify as a Trainer.

    Sewing Operator 4:

    • Must fulfill all the minimum qualifications and the Sewing Operator 3 qualifications noted above.
    • Able to manage increasingly complex sewing tasks with no assistance, on multiple products/assemblies; regularly trains others on some products/assemblies

    While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to work near moving

    mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee is frequently exposed to heat (non-weather). The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 20 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 30 pounds and occasionally lift 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
