A well-established metals distributor serving manufacturers throughout New England is seeking an experienced Outside Sales Representative to drive business development and expand strategic customer relationships. The company supplies aluminum, carbon steel, stainless steel, brass, copper, and specialty alloys to a diverse customer base including OEMs, machine shops, industrial manufacturers, and defense contractors.

Position SummaryThe Outside Sales Representative will be responsible for managing and expanding an established sales territory throughout New England. This role requires a consultative sales professional who can develop new business opportunities while strengthening existing customer relationships.
The ideal candidate has extensive experience selling metal products, understands the procurement side of the metals business, and is comfortable managing the entire sales cycle-from prospecting and quoting through negotiation, order management, and long-term account development.
Success in this role will be measured not only by revenue growth but also by profitability, customer retention, and the ability to build lasting partnerships throughout the assigned territory.
Key Responsibilities Business Development & Territory Growth Develop new business opportunities throughout the assigned territory.
Prospect manufacturers, OEMs, machine shops, fabricators, and industrial customers.
Expand existing customer relationships while identifying opportunities for additional products and services.
Develop strategic territory plans to maximize revenue and market share.
Build long-term relationships with purchasing managers, operations leaders, engineers, and executive decision-makers.
Conduct regular customer visits to understand production requirements and future demand.
Serve as the primary point of contact throughout the sales process.
Deliver exceptional customer service and responsiveness.
Manage the complete sales cycle from prospecting through order fulfillment.
Prepare quotations, negotiate pricing, and close profitable business opportunities.
Meet or exceed monthly, quarterly, and annual sales objectives.
Maintain healthy gross margins while remaining competitive within the marketplace.
Sell aluminum, stainless steel, carbon steel, brass, copper, and specialty alloy products.
Understand customer applications and recommend appropriate material solutions.
Monitor market pricing, industry trends, and competitive activity.
Work closely with purchasing to ensure material availability and competitive sourcing.
Partner with inside sales, purchasing, operations, and warehouse teams to ensure customer expectations are met.
Coordinate deliveries, resolve service issues, and communicate production priorities.
Maintain accurate CRM activity, forecasting, and pipeline reporting.
10+ years of outside sales experience within metals distribution, service centers, or industrial manufacturing.
Strong knowledge of aluminum, stainless steel, carbon steel, brass, copper, and related alloys.
Proven success developing new business and growing existing accounts.
Demonstrated ability to consistently exceed sales goals while maintaining strong profit margins.
Existing relationships throughout the New England manufacturing market preferred.
Excellent communication, negotiation, and presentation skills.
Strong organizational and territory management abilities.
Valid driver's license and willingness to travel throughout the assigned territory.
Existing book of business within Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont, or Rhode Island.
Experience selling to OEMs, machine shops, industrial manufacturers, and defense contractors.
Understanding of the purchasing and sourcing side of metals distribution.
Experience utilizing ERP or metals industry software such as Metals360, Sequel, or similar platforms.
Ability to read engineering drawings and customer specifications.
Experience managing annual revenues exceeding $3 million while maintaining 25%+ gross margins.
