The Role

Under limited supervision, operates fabricating machinery such as cutoff saws, brake presses, forming machines, and punch machines that cut, shape, and bend metal plates and sheets. Lays out, fabricates, assembles, and installs sheet metal products, utilizing knowledge of working characteristics of metallic and nonmetallic materials, machining, and layout techniques using hand tools, power tools, machines, and equipment. This position is in La Vergne, Tennessee.

Your Responsibilities

Reads and interprets blueprints to determine sequence and methods of fabricating, assembling, and installing sheet metal products.

• Selects gauge and type of sheet metal according to product specifications, sets stops or guides to specified length as indicated by scale, rule, or template. • Lays out and marks dimensions and reference lines on material using calipers, using scribers, dividers, squares, and rulers, applying knowledge of shop mathematics and layout techniques to develop and trace patterns of product or parts or using templates. • Works with technical drawings, interpreting and calculating dimensions, and transferring information into set-ups. • Sets up and operates fabricating machines such as shears, brakes, presses, to cut, bend, block, and form or straighten materials, selects positions and secures dies, blades, cutters, and fixtures onto machine using rule, square, shims, templates, hand tools, and built-in gauges. • May rivet and spot weld work pieces, tend machines that fabricate or operate plasma arc cutters to cut patterns from sheet metal. • Adjusts controls to set and regulate CNC position, such as pressure and depth of ram stroke, trims files, grinds, deburrs, buffs, and smoothens surfaces using hand tools and portable power tools, including file, hand grinder, wire brush, and/or vibrobowl. • Welds, rivets, clips using hand tools, power tools, and equipment.

Inspects Assemblies

Inspects assemblies in a supportive framework according to blueprints using hand tools, power tools, and lifting and handling devices. Inspects assemblies and installation for conformance to specifications using measuring instruments such as calipers, scales, dial indicators, gauges, and micrometers.

Problem-Solving and Quality Control

Works out problems on a general instruction basis for various types of mechanical parts. Handles basic jobs directly from work orders without the requirement for detailed production drawings. Assists in designs of prototype models working with an absolute minimum of drawings. Works primarily from verbal discussions with the project engineer.

Collaboration and Continuous Improvement

Works individually and as a team to develop and implement quality and efficiency improvements. Maintains quality requirements in the sheet metal area and ensures that work meets or exceeds these requirements. Other duties as assigned through identified and established process improvements.

Requirements

High school diploma or general education degree, GED with six months to one year related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience with production processes, machines, tools.

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, proportions, and decimals. Ability and understanding of various measuring devices in meeting drawing dimensions and specifications. Ability to read and interpret documents such as blueprints, work orders, work instructions, diagrams, safety rules, operating, and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Good verbal and written communication skills are necessary. Work requires continual attention to detail, following through, establishing priorities, and meeting deadlines.
