Job Title: Sheriff Deputy
Job Description
Under general supervision, enforces laws, investigates crimes, provides security for correctional facilities, patrols assigned areas, serves individuals with summons, subpoenas, attachments, and legal notices issued by courts, etc. May serve in all areas under the jurisdiction of the Sheriff, e.g., Patrol, Investigations, Corrections, Court Services, etc., as the operational needs of the Department dictate. Performs other related duties as required.
Required Qualifications
Any combination of training and work experience which indicates possession of the skills, knowledge, and abilities listed below.
- Completion of secondary education or GED equivalent supplemented by completion of Ohio Basic Peace Officer Training Program per Section 109.77 A of the Ohio Revised Code.
- Must possess a current valid State of Ohio vehicle operators license and pass a Department required physical examination and substance screening.
- Must be able to successfully complete Correctional Training Programs as prescribed by the State of Ohio and Federal guidelines.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of Department policies and procedures, arrest procedures, Ohio Revised Code, interviewing techniques, investigation techniques, counseling principles, safety practices, and procedures, corrections procedures, fingerprinting, prisoner release policies, and procedures, emergency medical procedures, court process, and procedures, employee training and development.
- Ability to carry out instructions in written, oral, or picture form, recognize unusual or threatening conditions, and take appropriate action, deal with problems involving several variables in a familiar context, define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions, handle sensitive inquiries from the public, demonstrate physical fitness, communicate effectively in oral and written form, read, copy, and calculate accurately.
- Skill in use of firearms in accordance to Department standards.
Job Duties
The duties listed below are intended to depict tasks performed by this classification.
Patrol and Enforcement
- Patrols assigned County area enforcing motor vehicle and other laws and issues citations where applicable.
- Watches for stolen vehicles and visits accident scenes to give assistance to injured parties.
- Investigates conditions and causes of accidents.
- Checks property within assigned jurisdiction.
- Responds to criminal and civil complaints and conducts investigations.
- Interviews complainants, witnesses, victims, suspects, etc.
- Operates various law enforcement equipment, e.g., KR-IO radar unit, Breathalyzer, Intoxilizer, radio, etc.
- Counsels crime victims.
Security and Discipline
- Maintains security and discipline of inmates in jail facility, e.g., monitors inmates during meals, bathing, sleeping, recreational, and other activities.
- Watches security screens.
- Inspects mail and property for contraband, pornographic items, unauthorized forms, and/or cash.
- Insures that law enforcement weapons are secured.
- Patrols floor housing units and recreational areas.
- Searches inmates and housing units.
- Counts and verifies inmates in area.
- Monitors work performed in kitchen, laundry, or other designated areas.
- Controls use of dangerous equipment or supplies.
- Escorts and/or monitors movement of inmates between areas of facility.
- Searches incoming prisoners.
- Receives and releases prisoners.
- Monitors prisoners releases, e.g., assures that time has been served and no holders detainers and/or active warrants exist, and/or assigns inmates in appropriate category by reviewing medical, emotional, and behavioral situations and makes housing assignments.
Investigations and Evidence
- Conducts investigations and gathers evidence, e.g., interviews suspects, examines evidence, diagrams, crime scenes, etc.
- Facilitates resolution of misdemeanor cases at pretrial stage, e.g., appears in lieu of arresting officer, obtains evidence for prosecutors use, concurs with plea bargaining, notifies arresting officer of disposition of case, etc.
- Conducts surveillance and makes arrests.
- Runs checks and makes arrests.
- Serves individuals with summons, subpoenas, attachments, and legal notices issued by courts and makes arrests as necessary.
- Appears in court as witness, takes, develops, and prints photographs.
- Maintains file of fingerprints.
- Prepares case files and/or card index.
- Prepares reports, e.g., prosecutor and/or Grand Jury information, incident, juvenile arrest warrants, case disposition, etc.
- Performs other related duties, e.g., checks on possible warrants, sets up hearings for inmates with charges from other counties or agencies, logs and dispenses subpoenas for Deputies and inmates needed in court.
Court Appearances and Service
- Serves legal documents on parties as directed by the court, e.g., summons, notices, subpoenas, writs, executions, restraining orders, etc.
- Locates whereabouts of parties to be served.
- Arranges for vehicle tows.
- Provides security for courtrooms.
- Maintains security of inmates during court appearances.
- Transports inmates outside of jail facility.
- Makes arrests pursuant to outstanding warrants and violations of the law.
- Appears in court as witness.
- Researches, develops, and drafts curriculum and tests for law enforcement and correctional courses for agency personnel, e.g., academy, defensive driving, firearms, self-defense, etc.
- Conducts classes.
Record Keeping and Reporting
- Records daily activities in logs.
- Prepares reports on activities, investigations, incidents, service on documents, bookings, etc.
- Maintains accurate records regarding crimes, types, prepares reports, and other documentation as required.
- Contacts other law enforcement agencies regarding suspects, inmates, victims, etc.
- Provides information to the public regarding law enforcement matters.
Adherence to Policies and Procedures
- Adheres to the policies and procedures of the agency and to applicable laws.
- Attends all required training seminars, workshops, as specified.
