Description

The Hennepin County Sheriffs Office (HCSO) is looking to hire a Sheriffs Captain to direct and supervise work of a major division of the Sheriffs Office. The HCSO is dedicated to serving the community with transparency, responsiveness, and compassion.

Location and hours:

This position may be assigned to any division within the Hennepin County Sheriffs Office and requires flexibility for a rotating schedule including days, evenings, overnights, on-call, weekends, holidays, and requires being on call 24 hours/day, 7 days/week, and 365 days/year.

About the position type:

This is a full-time benefit-earning position. You must be a current regular or probationary employee of the Hennepin County Sheriffs Office to be eligible for this position. Limited duration employees are not eligible.

This position is internally classified as a Sheriffs Captain.

In this position, you will:

  • Plan, organize, direct, and evaluate the work of law enforcement and support staff assigned to the division.
  • Assist in departmental planning, prepare budgets, and create the divisions annual report.
  • Maintain effective public relations.
  • Handle grievances and divisional complaints.
  • Coordinate divisional operations with other law enforcement agencies and county departments.
  • Provide leadership to further department-based strategies that align with County goals, mission, and core values for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI).
  • Engage in ongoing professional development related to DEI.

Need to have:

  • Eight years or more of approved law enforcement experience, including one or more years of experience as a law enforcement supervisor at the rank of Lieutenant or above.
  • Must be licensed as a Peace Officer by the State of Minnesota.
  • A valid drivers license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County drivers permit.

Nice to have:

  • Experience or education around addressing racial equity, gender equity, LGBTQIA equity, neurodiversity equity, or differing ability equity.
  • Experience implementing DEI initiatives or a strong desire to learn and engage in these efforts.
  • Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in their work and interactions.
  • Effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to:
  • Work effectively with an increasingly diverse client population.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, management, agencies, and the public.

About the department:

The Hennepin County Sheriffs Office serves the countys 1.2 million residents. State law mandates most of the sheriffs office duties, including managing the county jail, providing security to the district court, and patrolling the waterways in the county.

The Sheriffs Office also runs specialized initiatives like Criminal Information Sharing and Analysis (CISA), Violent Offender Task Force (VOTF), Crime Scene Investigation, Criminal Investigation, Community Outreach and Employee Wellness.
