Shipfitter tasks include, but are not limited to:

 

Cutting, grinding, and assembly of metal structural parts using fitting aids and rigging equipment to align parts according to blueprints. Tacking and welding of foundations and installing temporary fasteners to hold structural members in place. Performs other related tasks as assigned.

The candidate should have a minimum of five years of on the job experience, demonstrated knowledge of blueprint reading, ship terminology, and different metals. Flux Core Arc Welding (FCAW) T-1 welding certification required. Must pass hands on assessment test conducted by NASSCO, which includes a knowledge assessment, burning and scarfing assessment, and fabrication assessment. Ability to work at heights and in confined spaces and to access and move around ship safely.

 

Essential Job Tasks:

 

  1. Lays out work from blueprints.
  2. Cuts, burns, grinds, rip-out and fit-up of metal structural parts for placement on ship.
  3. Tacks and welds foundations and structural members.
  4. Operates high reach equipment including condors and scissor lift.
  5. Sets up tools and equipment at job site. Cleans up and removes scrap to nearest scrap tub.
  6. Ability to use rigging equipment.

Assessment/Criteria:

 

If a candidate was previously certified at NASSCO, but the certifications are currently expired, the candidate will need to recertify by accomplishing a 3F (vertical fillet weld) test. Candidates who are new or do not have certification records in the company's system will need to complete the assessment requirements described below. Note that the candidate must follow all safety procedures. Any infractions will result in disqualification.

 

The shipfitter assessment has four modules that are organized according to progressive skills requirements. Candidates must pass ALL modules listed below. In addition, All safety procedures must be followed. Any safety infractions will result in disqualification.
