Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of HII, is offering a $500 sign‑on bonus and a $500 relocation bonus to trade trainee hires that live 50 miles or greater from Newport News, VA. The position is for candidates with no trades experience willing to complete three weeks of unpaid training in shipfitting, or for those who already hold a certificate in a related trade. The training program is unpaid, 3 weeks (120 hours), operating 7:00 am – 3:30 pm, Monday–Friday. Certificates in welding (SMAW, GMAW), plasma cutting, oxy‑fuel cutting, construction maintenance, carpentry, auto body, or sheet metal fabrication may waive the trainee program.Our marine trades training (MTT) programs are offered once a month at Camp Community College (Suffolk, VA), Virginia Peninsula Community College (Hampton, VA), or Tidewater Community College (Portsmouth, VA). Courses are 120 hours long.Shipfitters fabricate and assemble steel structures of aircraft carriers and submarines, interpreting blueprints and plans. They may work in extreme heights, confined spaces, and various weather conditions.
