This is a full-time, 40 hour per week position with the Department of Corrections. The Department of Corrections is committed to providing meaningful work opportunities that develop vocational skills, promote accountability, and support successful reentry. This position supervises a Cabinetry shop within a Correctional Facility. The shop foreman overseas incarcerated workers engaged in the production of cabinetry and wood-based products for state and approved private customers. Production activities may include measuring, cutting, assembling, sanding, finishing, installing hardware, and other woodworking and fabrication processes. The foreman is responsible for balancing security, safety, and productivity while developing workforce skills that prepare individuals for employment upon release.

Summary:

The cabinetry shop foreman is responsible for the overall operation of the shop, including production, quality control, safety, inventory management, and workforce development. This rule directs and trains incarcerated workers while ensuring adherence to the Department of Corrections policies and maintaining a secure work environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Provides daily work direction and supervision to incarcerated workers to ensure production goals and shop objectives are met.
• Interviews, selects, assigns, evaluates, and recommends termination of incarcerated workers.
• Trains workers and cabinetry, woodworking techniques, and the safe use of tools and equipment.
• Develops and maintains production schedules to meet deadlines and maximize efficiency.
• Insurers quality control standards are met, and products are marketable and meet specifications.
• Assigns tasks based on individual skill levels to promote productivity and skill development.
• Monitors shop safety and enforces all safety procedures and department policies.
• Maintains accountability for tools, materials, equipment, and incarcerated workers.
• Conducts safety meetings and reinforces safe work practices.
• Order supplies, materials, and equipment, and maintains appropriate inventory levels.
• Estimates material and labor costs for cabinetry and woodworking projects.
• Maintains accurate records for production, inventory, and worker performance.
• Works with vendors and purchasing staff to obtain materials at competitive pricing.
• Reviews project specifications and insurance compliance with required standards.
• Implements process improvements to increase efficiency, reduce waste, and control costs.
• Evaluates work in progress and provides coaching and corrective instruction as needed.
• Maintains a secure and structured work environment at all times.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

• strong knowledge of cabinetry construction, woodworking, and carpentry techniques;
• experience with measuring, layout, cutting, assembling, finishing, an installation of cabinetry;
• familiarity with woodworking tools and equipment (table saws, routers, Sanders, planers, drills, etc.);
• understanding of shop workflow, production processes, and quality standards;
• ability to read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, and specifications;
• general knowledge of production of manufacturing environment.

Knowledge of:

• Department of Corrections policies, procedures, and institutional operations;
• behavior, attitudes, and supervision of incarcerated individuals;
• inventory control and basic record keeping systems;
• computers and software applications, including Microsoft, Global Shop, Sketchlist, and other related software;
• save operation of woodworking tools and shop equipment;
• vocational and technical training methods and instructional techniques.

Ability to:

• supervise and direct a workforce in a secure environment;
• communicate clearly, professionally, and effectively;
• establish and maintain effective working relationships with direct and indirect supervisors, correctional staff, incarcerated workers, internal and external partners;
• train and mentor individuals with varying skill levels;
• remain calm and make sound decisions under pressure;
• respond appropriately to safety and security situations;
• maintain accurate documentation and reports.

Conditions of Employment:

• must successfully complete all required Department of Corrections training, including TPR;
• must maintain the physical ability to perform job related duties, including;
• standing for extended periods;
• lifting, carrying, and moving materials and equipment demonstrating and assisting with physical tasks;
• must be able to respond to emergency situations and main control of assigned areas;
• must pass required background checks and screenings;
• TB (tuberculosis) screening is required upon hire.

Work Environment:

• work is performed in a Correctional Facility setting;
• environment may include noise, dust, temperature fluctuations, and use of industrial woodworking equipment;
• requires constant awareness of safety and security procedures.

Impact of Role

This position plays a critical role in preparing car incarcerated individuals for successful inventory by providing hands on training, work ethic development, and marketable skills in cabinetry and woodworking. The foreman directly contributes to the reducing recidivism while supporting the operational goals of the Department of Corrections

This position is eligible for Veterans' Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
