Job Title: Shop Technician
Exemption Status: Non-Exempt
Reports to: Transportation Director / Fleet Supervisor
Dept./School: Transportation Department

Primary Purpose:
Assist in the maintenance, repair, and inspection of district vehicles, including school buses, to ensure safe and efficient operation. Support transportation mechanics by performing routine service tasks and maintaining a clean, organized, and safe bus barn/shop environment.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Valid Texas driver's license (CDL preferred or ability to obtain)

Special Knowledge/Skills:
  • Basic knowledge of vehicle maintenance and repair (diesel and gasoline engines preferred)
  • Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment
  • Knowledge of preventative maintenance procedures
  • Understanding of shop safety practices and OSHA standards
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Basic record-keeping skills

Experience:
  • Experience in vehicle maintenance or mechanical work preferred
  • Experience working with heavy-duty vehicles or school buses preferred

Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Support:
  • Assist mechanics with routine maintenance of buses and district vehicles (oil changes, filter replacement, tire service, lubrication, etc.)
  • Perform basic repairs as directed
  • Inspect vehicles for visible defects and report issues

Shop Operations:
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the bus barn and shop areas
  • Clean tools, equipment, and workspaces after use
  • Assist with moving and positioning vehicles in the yard/shop

Inventory and Equipment:
  • Assist in maintaining inventory of parts, tools, and supplies
  • Receive and store parts and materials
  • Maintain tools and ensure proper storage

Safety and Compliance:
  • Follow all safety procedures and guidelines
  • Assist with ensuring vehicles meet state inspection and safety standards
  • Properly handle and dispose of hazardous materials (oil, fuel, etc.)

Transportation Support:
  • Assist with fueling buses and checking fluid levels
  • May assist with road calls or emergency repairs
  • Support preparation of buses for routes and inspections

Other Duties:
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Follow district policies and procedures
  • Perform other duties as assigned
