Position Overview
Southmont JH/HS is seeking a dynamic, passionate, and energetic Show Choir Teacher to lead, inspire, and grow our choral music program for the 2026-2027 school year. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in vocal pedagogy, choral conducting, and stage choreography, alongside a commitment to fostering a collaborative, high-energy environment where students can thrive creatively and academically.
This role oversees both traditional choral ensembles and our competitive/performance-based Show Choir programs at the junior high and high school levels.
Key Responsibilities
- Instruction & Direction: Plan, teach, and direct junior high and high school choral music and show choir ensembles, emphasizing vocal technique, music theory, stage presence, and showmanship.
- Show Choir Production: Arrange or select appropriate music, collaborate on or design choreography, coordinate with backing bands/instrumentalists, and oversee costuming and stage design.
- Performances & Competitions: Organize, rehearse, and direct students for school concerts, community events, organizational contests, and regional show choir competitions.
- Classroom Management: Maintain a positive, inclusive, and structured classroom culture that encourages artistic risk-taking and mutual respect.
- Program Administration: Manage the choral department budget, maintain uniforms/costumes, oversee sheet music libraries, and coordinate event logistics (travel, equipment, etc.).
- Collaboration: Work closely with the broader fine arts department, school administration, and the music boosters/parent organization to support program goals.
- All other duties as assigned
Qualifications & Requirements
- Education: Bachelors degree in Music Education or a related field from an accredited institution.
- Licensure: Valid Indiana Teaching License in Vocal/General Music (or eligibility for immediate licensure).
- Experience: Previous experience directing or participating in competitive Show Choir is highly preferred. Strong piano accompaniment skills are a plus.
- Skills: Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills, with a proven ability to motivate and engage junior high and high school-aged students.
