Birch Agency is seeking a skilled and dedicated Sign Language Interpreter to provide 1:1 communication support for a student who is deaf or hard of hearing in a school-based setting in Halifax, Virginia.
This opportunity provides the chance to make a meaningful impact by ensuring the student has access to classroom instruction, school activities, and educational services through effective communication support. The ideal candidate will be fluent in American Sign Language (ASL) and passionate about creating an inclusive educational environment where students can fully participate and succeed.
Provide 1:1 American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation services for a student as outlined in their Individualized Education Program (IEP).
Interpret classroom instruction, lectures, discussions, assignments, meetings, trainings, and school-related activities.
Facilitate communication between the student, teachers, peers, administrators, and support staff.
Adapt interpretation methods to meet the communication needs, abilities, and learning style of the student.
Prepare and review academic subject matter to ensure accurate interpretation.
Support student participation during classroom activities and unstructured school settings.
Collaborate with classroom teachers, special education staff, Teachers of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing, and related service providers.
Participate in team meetings, professional development, and school trainings as needed.
Maintain confidentiality and follow professional interpreting standards and ethical guidelines.
Promote an accessible and inclusive learning environment for students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) required.
Associate degree in interpreting, deaf education, classroom interpreting, or a related field preferred.
Educational interpreting experience preferred.
EIPA score of 3.5+ or equivalent interpreting credential preferred.
Experience supporting students in an educational setting preferred.
Strong communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills.
Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary school team.
School-based educational setting supporting a student who is deaf or hard of hearing.
Provides dedicated 1:1 interpretation support within the classroom environment.
Collaborative environment with teachers, administrators, and related service providers.
