Job Description

Major/Essential Functions

  • Interprets in a wide variety of class topics by accurately deciding on the language mode to use with students; possesses the ability to decipher without bias the speaker’s intent, vocabulary, affect/tone, register, rate and style of the source language, and can simultaneously decide how to accurately represent these aspects in the target language.
  • Communicates using American Sign Language or appropriately matches the signing style and preferences of the Deaf or Hard of Hearing student enrolled with the university. The signed language can range between signed English to ASL and/or a combination thereof.
  • Provides expressive and receptive interpretation or transliteration of the classroom, laboratory, and other relevant situations.
  • Prepares for class by reading notes or slides in advance, and by bringing/wearing required materials )lab coat, goggles, etc.
  • Works towards a comprehensive environment that removes barriers and prevents discrimination towards students who use sign language as well as enhances community awareness and sensitivity through training and cultural mediation.
  • Participates in staff development and continuously seeks education to enhance interpreting knowledge, skills, abilities as well as ethical standards.
  • Ability to effectively work in interpreting teams towards a common goal of access to the information through clear communication with others. Respectfully and professionally give and receive feedback to support the accuracy of the message.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Level I/Basic Interpreter certification through the Board for Evaluation of Interpreter/Human & Health Services Commission.
  • Associate degree/Bachelor degree strongly desired.
  • Three or more years interpreting experience in a post-secondary setting.
  • Progress towards certification through state or national organizations.
  • Have the ability, skills and fluency within various register levels in American Sign Language with qualifications to be determined by the Assistant Director overseeing the Deaf and Hard of Hearing student population.

Required Qualifications

Texas Board for Interpreter certification or RID level of Basic, Advanced, or Master; or be able to obtain Basic level certification within one year of hire, or show progressive improvement towards certification. Ability to interpret language at various levels of difficulty with knowledge of vocabulary and grammar. Fluent use of American Sign Language spoken to sign and sign to spoken.
