JOB TITLE: Sign Language Interpreter for Deaf/Hard of Hearing
REPORTS TO: Principal and Special Services Director or designee
UNIT CLASSIFICATION: PSE Para-Educator
PRIMARY PURPOSE:
The job of Sign Language interpreter was established for the purpose(s) of assisting in the instruction or supervision of deaf/hard of hearing students; providing voice to sign and sign to voice support; performing classroom clerical tasks; assisting students, teachers and parents in communicating; providing input into the evaluation of students' progress; and serving as a resource to other school personnel requiring assistance with deaf/hard of hearing persons.

Performs other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 10% sitting, 10% walking, and 80% standing.
Preferably wear dark or solid colored clothing in order to mitigate visual distractions when signing.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience
High School Diploma or equivalent
As of August 2016 must have successfully achieved the performance standard established by the PESB (Professional Educator Standards Board) by passing one of the education interpreter assessments identified by the PESB.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of American Sign Language (ASL, Signed Exact English (SEE), and/or other signed systems including methods and techniques used with communicating with the deaf/hard of hearing.
Knowledge of technical signs and/or vocabulary used in educations settings.
Knowledge is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or rations; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and solve practical problems.
Ability to:
Hear spoken language communication
Use ASL, SEE Sign, and/or other sign systems
Interpret spoken English at a rate appropriate for expected job performance
Understand and use proper English, including vocabulary and grammar
Understand and be able to translate academic language to the cognitive level of the
student
Function as a member of the educational team performing
Maintain professional conduct at all time.
