ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Operates various pieces of construction equipment such as: aerial bucket truck; trencher; forklift; loop saw; pipe threader; welder; concrete saw; and various hand tools.
Troubleshoots and performs both shop and on-site repair of malfunctioning signals, controllers, communication equipment, and municipal lighting required for the operation of the City''s transportation system both during normal working hours and on a rotating standby or on call holiday and night work schedule.
Repairs and tests signals and associated hardware, rewires, replaces broken parts, etc.
Enters work orders on computer.
Provides traffic control at work site.
Installs traffic signal heads, traffic loop detectors, etc. which involves: reading signalization blueprints; performing various overhead and underground construction activities; and the wiring of signals and service disconnects.
Assists in receiving and stocking appropriate repair and construction materials for the shop and each vehicle.
Assists in the maintenance of both shop and grounds.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS
Hangs banners and other holiday related decorations in the downtown Knoxville area.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of the materials, methods, and equipment used in the installation of traffic signals and their control devices.
Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions.
Knowledge of the City of Knoxville''s Transportation Engineering Division standards, practices, and traffic signal locations.
Ability to determine the cause of and to correct the malfunction of traffic signals.
Ability to work in heavy traffic in all kinds of weather at any hour of the day.
Ability to operate an aerial access bucket truck and other pieces of construction equipment.
Ability to determine material and electric part requirements for completion of a specific job.
Ability to read and understand diagrams of basic signal layouts.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with fellow employees.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This position consists of primarily heavy work, requiring the incumbent to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 50 pounds (or less) of force frequently, in order to lift/carry, push/pull, or otherwise move objects. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Graduation from a standard high school or equivalent.
Possession of a Class B Commercial Driver''s License as required by State Law, or ability to obtain within 6 months.
Must obtain IMSA Work Zone and IMSA Level I for Traffic Signal Technicians certifications within the probationary period.
