Job Description and Responsibilities

This is a full-time, on-site position for a Significant Needs Special Education Teacher at a school in the SW Denver/Littleton, CO area.

In this role, the Significant Needs (AN) Special Education Teacher (SPED) will develop and deliver individualized instruction for students navigating complex cognitive, physical, or behavioral challenges. The core focus of this position is building a structured, supportive environment that promotes independence, supports academic growth, and ensures students are meaningfully included in the broader school community. Through the use of current assistive technologies and a collaborative teaching approach, you'll play a key role in helping students reach their full potential and succeed.

Responsibilities

    • Instructional Leadership & Logistics: Design a well-rounded daily schedule that balances adapted academic content with essential life skills, community involvement, and social growth. Coordinate schedules smoothly across students, multi-disciplinary specialists, and support staff.
    • Curriculum Adaptation: Develop and deliver modified, direct instruction aligned with state standards, making lessons accessible and engaging for students who require adapted curricula.
    • Team Collaboration: Work closely with general education teachers on joint planning and co-teaching to expand inclusive classroom opportunities.
    • Paraprofessional Guidance: Supervise and direct classroom paraprofessionals, guiding their daily work to support small-group instruction and individualized interventions.
    • Community Integration: Support and accompany students during school-wide events and community outings, ensuring accessible participation across all developmental levels.
    • IEP Development: Oversee the full Individualized Education Program (IEP) process — writing thorough plans, assessing functional and academic skills, and monitoring progress.
    • Meeting Facilitation: Organize and lead collaborative IEP meetings with families, administrators, and specialists to keep student support unified.
    • Behavioral Support: Conduct Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBAs) and carry out targeted Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) as needed to encourage positive classroom behavior.
    • State Testing: Administer and oversee the Colorado Alternative Assessment (CoALT) for eligible students in accordance with state regulations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree (or higher) in Special Education, along with Teaching Certification
  • State-issued SPED teacher license
  • 1+ years of experience in a school setting preferred
  • Experience working with children
  • Strong organizational and time management abilities
  • Comfortable using technology
  • Successful fingerprint background clearance
  • Ability to work collaboratively with school staff and parents, exercising tact and discretion in both internal and external communication

Physical Requirements

This role involves working and playing alongside students, which requires employees to perform physical tasks such as lifting, sitting, walking, standing, crawling, and engaging with students in various locations and activities, all in line with district-outlined duties.
