About the Positions
Limited Hourly EMTs and Paramedics are non-sworn, part-time employees who are trained to perform and do perform emergency medical service duties in support of the Palo Alto Fire Department. Incumbents respond to medical and other emergencies, provide first aid and basic life support care in prehospital settings, support rescue activities ,assist with patient assessment and transport, maintain medical and communications equipment and vehicles, complete required reports and documentation, and perform related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Employees must be available to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays, overtime, and emergency call-backs, based on operational needs.
The Fire Medic One ambulance will operate seven days a week from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00p.m. Full-time staff will work 12-hour shifts, and part-time (limited hourly) staff will provide coverage as needed.
Selected candidates will advance through a competitive recruitment process and, if successful, will attend the Palo Alto Fire Medic One EMS Academy, which is anticipated to begin in January.

Limited Hourly Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)-
Pursuant to required State certification and local EMS accreditation, a Limited Hourly EMT performs basic life support duties in support of Fire Department operations. This classification is distinguished from Limited Hourly Paramedic, which performs advanced life support duties.

Supplemental Information
This is a Limited Hourly non-benefited position and not to exceed 999 hours per fiscal year (July - June) or 960 for retirees. The number of hours per week and schedule will be determined based on the assignment.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements
Works evenings, nights, weekends and holidays; shift to be determined by operational requirements. Exposure to running, walking, crawling, climbing, stooping, lifting, and inspecting in confined spaces; work in inclement weather conditions.
