DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS OF WORK

Under general supervision performs duties involved in the con¬struction, alteration, modification and/or maintenance of buildings and facilities.

ESSENTIAL EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

The following illustrates examples of some of the essential duties and responsibilities of the Skilled Craftsman. There may be other essential functions, not listed below, in order to accomplish the tasks as presented by the Supervisor.

  • Forms area in preparation of concrete placement
  • Places steel reinforcements
  • Places concrete
  • Finishes concrete
  • Lays block
  • Plasters exterior surfaces
  • Installs/repairs windows
  • Hangs roofing joists in preparation for roof deck
  • Roofs from deck to finish
  • Builds partitions, hangs interior and exterior doors
  • Places drywall
  • Finishes drywall
  • Lays ceramic tile
  • Installs acoustical ceilings
  • Installs vinyl floor tile, sheet flooring, and carpet
  • Performs millwork
  • Performs finish carpentry
  • Performs other related duties as required

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Considerable knowledge of the standard practices, processes, methods, tools, and materials used in the construction trade
  • Knowledge of the use and care of standard construction equipment, tools, machine operated equipment
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and the safety practices of the trade
  • Basic knowledge of blueprints and specifications
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to work effectively with other employees
  • Ability to meet and deal with the public with courtesy and tact

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The following are some of the physical requirements associated with this position. Reasonable accommodation may be made by the City to enable an individual to perform the essential duties/functions of the position.

  • Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact.
  • Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to, personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine.
  • Work involves working indoors and outdoors in inclement weather conditions.
  • Work involves sitting and standing for long periods of time.
  • Work involves frequent typing, walking and bending, lifting and stooping for short periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of up to 30 pounds.

MINIMIUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

  • Applicant must have at least two years paid experience in the general construction field, and must be able to demonstrate proficiency in two or more of the following areas:

o Concrete work

o Steel work

o Rough carpentry

o Finish carpentry

o Roofing; glazing

o Masonry

o Floor and ceiling finishing

o Millwork

o Drywall

  • Must possess a valid Florida Driver License.
