Position Statement: A sleep technologist works under the general supervision of the medical director to provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders including in center and out of center sleep testing, diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, comprehensive patient care and direct patient education. A sleep technologist can perform the duties defined for a sleep technician and is able to provide oversight of other sleep center staff. The sleep technologist is credentialed in sleep technology. Key Responsibilities: Collect, analyze, and integrate patient information to identify and meet the patient-specific needs (physical/mental limitations, current emotional/physiological status regarding the testing procedure, pertinent medical/social history. Determine final testing parameters/procedures in conjunction with the ordering physician or clinical director and laboratory protocols. Review the patients history and verify the medical order. Follow sleep center protocols related to the sleep study. Evaluate sleep study related equipment and inventory. Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide age specific care in the treatment, assessment, and education of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients. Demonstrate adherence to AASM scoring parameters for HSAT; identify artifact, inadequate signals and study failures and generate an accurate report. Document routine observations, including sleep stages and clinical events, changes in procedure, and other significant events to facilitate scoring and interpretation of polysomnographic results. Is responsible for daily preparation and upkeep of sleep bedrooms including monthly inventory of supplies needed. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Associate degree, preferably experience in the healthcare field, with the motivation and ability to complete intensive on-the-job training and study for RPGST. Successful completion of a sleep technology program associated with a state licensed and/or a nationally accredited educational facility or equivalent experience and documented proficiency for all competencies required of a sleep technician. Expectations: Within 6-month of full-time employment, it is expected that the new hire will take their RPGST BLS certification required or within six months of hire. Documentation in patients chart is done through the EMR, requires an understanding of the EMR or the ability to learn and comprehend. Strives to be a productive member of the department and the organization and always puts time to good use; seeks out work to be done and is always willing to help co-workers.
