Position Summary

CSU’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital is seeking a Veterinary Assistant to support the Small Animal Blood Bank. The assistant will play a vital role in facilitating safe, compassionate donor appointments and assists with blood product processing. This role supports patient care throughout the hospital by providing life-saving red blood cell and plasma products. Key responsibilities include animal handling, communicating with pet owners, record keeping, and learning technical aspects of blood product processing and storage.

Brief Work Unit Description

Veterinary Blood Bank – CSU Veterinary Health System

Essential Job Duties

  • Donor Appointment Support: Assists the technicians with donor intake, screening, and restraint of feline and canine donors while ensuring donor comfort and safety. Communicates professionally and compassionately with pet owners. Performs duties with the goal of providing excellent patient care while maintaining a positive donor experience.
  • Blood Product Processing: Learns to assist with product handling and preparation for storage. This includes the centrifugation, separation and labeling of blood products.  Performs duties with the goal of supporting efficient and accurate blood product processing, by maintaining a high standard of quality control and attention to detail.
  • Administrative Support: Assists with client communication and donor scheduling. Assists with data entry to maintain donor records and product inventory. Performs duties with the goal of providing excellent donor communication and accurate records.
  • Organization: Helps maintain organization of the blood bank service by stocking supplies and organizing donor food stores.  Performs duties with the goal of supporting operational and business needs.

Conditions of Employment

  • Schedule: Ability to work 3-5 shifts per week, Monday–Friday, between 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to lift up to 40 pounds and assist with animal handling.
  • Safety: Must adhere to hospital safety and animal handling protocols.
  • Background Check: A pre-employment criminal background check is required for all new hires.
  • Essential Services Designation: Required to report without delay or interruption to provide essential or emergency services to ensure animal health, safety and welfare.

Supervision

                This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

Minimum Qualifications

HS Diploma or GED

Previous work experience in a veterinary or animal care setting.

Basic organizational skills and attention to detail.

Willingness to work within a collaborative team environment.

Preferred Qualifications

Experienced animal restraint skills for dogs and cats in a clinical setting.

Excellent communication skills when interacting with team members and pet owners.

Experience with record keeping and data entry in a clinical environment.

Interested in learning about veterinary transfusion medicine and blood product handling.

Salary Range

$17.50
