Are you an experienced Social Worker looking for flexible work that makes a real difference?

North Yorkshire Council is seeking qualified and experienced Social Workers to join our Emergency Duty Team (EDT) on a relief basis. This is an opportunity to support a vital out-of-hours service, responding to urgent situations involving adults, children, young people and families across North Yorkshire and the City of York.

About the Service

The Emergency Duty Team provides an emergency social work service outside normal office hours. We respond to situations requiring an immediate statutory response that cannot safely wait until the next working day.

As part of a small, experienced team, you will play a key role in delivering emergency interventions and safeguarding support when it is needed most.

What You Will Do

  • As a Relief EDT Social Worker, you will:
  • Respond to urgent referrals requiring immediate Local Authority intervention.
  • Manage safeguarding concerns involving both adults and children.
  • Undertake emergency assessments and interventions.
  • Complete Care Act duties and risk assessments where required.
  • Provide advice and guidance to partner agencies and professionals.
  • Assess, prioritise and manage complex and high-risk situations.
  • Make sound decisions independently within legislative and policy frameworks.

Working Arrangements

The EDT operates outside normal office hours:

  • Weekdays: From 4.30pm onwards
  • Weekends and Bank Holidays: From 8.00am

Relief shifts are offered on a flexible, as-needed basis, making this an excellent opportunity for Social Workers seeking additional work alongside existing commitments.

About You

You will:

  • Be a qualified Social Worker registered with Social Work England.
  • Have experience of working with adults and/or children in crisis situations.
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of safeguarding, relevant legislation and statutory responsibilities.
  • Be confident managing risk and making decisions under pressure.
  • Have the ability to work independently while maintaining effective partnership working.
  • Hold a full UK driving licence and have access to a vehicle for work purposes.

Why Join Us?

  • Flexible relief work to fit around your existing commitments.
  • Opportunities to broaden and maintain your statutory social work practice.
  • Exposure to a diverse range of complex and rewarding work.
  • Support from an experienced and knowledgeable EDT team.
  • The opportunity to make a meaningful difference when people are most vulnerable.
