Job Description

Nordstrom's Store Inventory Outbound Technology organization is seeking a Software Development Engineer 2 to join our team supporting the critical applications and services that enable back-of-house (BOH) employees to process and move inventory out of stores. Our portfolio encompasses the full outbound inventory movement lifecycle — including inter-store and DC transfers, return-to-vendor (RTV) workflows, outbound shipment processing, and related store operations tooling across Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack locations.

This role offers a developing engineer the opportunity to deepen their technical expertise while working with modern cloud architecture, interfacing with supply chain, inventory, and store operations systems that directly impact how merchandise flows through our network.

As an Engineer 2, you will independently own features and services and contribute to system design discussions. You'll work across a portfolio of front-end clients (web, Android) and back-end services in AWS, collaborating with business stakeholders, product managers, and cross-functional teams to deliver scalable solutions that support store teams, distribution centers, and supply chain operations.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Contribution

• Independently own and deliver features and services across the outbound inventory application portfolio with moderate supervision
• Contribute to system design discussions and provide input on technical approaches for inventory movement workflows
• Write clean, maintainable, and efficient code in Java, JavaScript, and other languages, adhering to coding standards and best practices
• Participate in architectural discussions and help identify technical debt and improvement opportunities

Code Quality & Testing

• Conduct thorough code reviews for peers, ensuring code quality, maintainability, and adherence to standards
• Design and implement comprehensive testing strategies at unit, integration, and end-to-end levels
• Ensure proper instrumentation and observability across outbound services

Infrastructure & Operations

• Contribute to Infrastructure as Code (IAC) implementations using Terraform to provision and manage AWS resources
• Support containerized applications and deployments using Docker and Kubernetes (EKS)
• Participate in monitoring and troubleshooting using tools like New Relic and Splunk
• Participate in the team's on-call rotation to ensure system uptime and availability for store operations

Team Collaboration & Development

• Contribute to team success by providing guidance on technical tasks and best practices
• Actively participate in Agile ceremonies including sprint planning, stand-ups, and retrospectives
• Collaborate with business and product partners to understand store operations requirements and translate them into scalable solutions
• Work with cross-functional teams — including supply chain, fulfillment, and store ops — on integration points and dependencies

Continuous Improvement

• Proactively identify and implement improvements to system performance, reliability, and team processes
• Stay current with emerging technologies and bring recommendations to the team
• Contribute to team documentation and knowledge sharing

Qualifications

Required

• 3–5 years of professional software engineering experience with Java-based microservices architecture
• Strong proficiency in Java, JavaScript, and Spring Boot as well as frameworks like React, React Native, Next.js, and Node.js
• Experience with SQL, including writing and optimizing queries
• Hands-on experience with AWS cloud services (S3, Lambda, etc.)
• Working knowledge of containerization using Docker and container orchestration with Kubernetes
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions
• Familiarity with monitoring and logging tools such as New Relic, Splunk, or similar technologies
• Experience with automated testing frameworks (JUnit, Mockito) and testing best practices
• Familiarity with event-driven architecture and Kafka
• Solid troubleshooting and problem-solving skills with attention to operational reliability
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and own features end-to-end
• Strong communication skills to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, store operations, and supply chain stakeholders
• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience

Preferred

• Experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform or equivalent)
• Previous experience in retail supply chain, inventory management, warehouse management systems, or outbound logistics
• Familiarity with store operations systems and back-of-house workflows
• Experience mentoring junior engineers

Work Environment

This is a fully remote position. We welcome candidates located in or near our preferred hub cities: Chicago, Atlanta, New York/New Jersey, or Seattle.

Pay Range Details

The pay range(s) below has been provided in compliance with state specific laws. Pay ranges may be different for other locations. 
Pay offers are dependent on the location, as well as job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

California: $103,000-$188,500 annually, Colorado: $103,000-$160,500 annually, Connecticut: $103,000-$188,500 annually, Delaware: $103,000-$160,500 annually, Hawaii: $103,000-$160,500 annually, Illinois: $103,000-$160,500 annually, Maine: $103,000-$160,500 annually, Maryland: $103,000-$188,500 annually, Massachusetts: $103,000-$188,500 annually, Minnesota: $103,000-$160,500 annually, Nevada: $103,000-$160,500 annually, New Jersey: $103,000-$188,500 annually, New York: $103,000-$188,500 annually, Rhode Island: $103,000-$160,500 annually, Virginia: $103,000-$188,500 annually, Washington: $103,000-$188,500 annually, Washington D.C.: $121,500-$188,500 annually
