If building secure systems that safely deploy server software to one of the world"s largest storage services excites you, the EBS Server Agility team is the place to do it. Our team builds and operates the deployment and patching infrastructure that keeps EBS server software current and secure across 400,000+ bare-metal servers - infrastructure that serves millions of AWS customers and exabytes of data every day.

We"re looking for a Software Development Engineer to design and build core components of our deployment and patching systems - from automated security patching workflows to train deployment pipelines that safely roll out new server software across dozens of AWS regions with zero customer impact. You"ll tackle complex problems involving safe deployment to stateful storage systems, automated rollback and canary analysis, manifest consistency, and secure autonomous server operations.

Server deployment at EBS sits in the critical path for security compliance and feature velocity. You"ll work alongside senior engineers and principal engineers across EC2 and EBS, contributing to cross-service integrations that make server deployments safer and more efficient. If you want to build secure systems that deploy themselves at AWS scale, we"d love to talk to you.

Key job responsibilities

  • Design and build deployment systems that safely update stateful storage software with zero customer impact
  • Build and improve automated security patching workflows - from patch ingestion through rollout with guaranteed manifest consistency
  • Develop safe deployment orchestration for stateful workloads - coordinating with the storage engine to drain, update, and restore service without data loss
  • Build automated canary analysis and rollback mechanisms that detect deployment anomalies and respond before customers are impacted
  • Contribute to secure, zero-access operational infrastructure for deployment observability and autonomous server operations
  • Design and implement AI-powered anomaly detection and self-healing automation for the deployment pipeline
  • Extend deployment capabilities to new partitions and edge environments with unique constraints
  • Participate in design reviews, conduct code reviews, and contribute to deployment safety best practices

A day in the life

Your work spans the full range of deployment engineering - from working through new payload requests and figuring out how to safely integrate new server components into the deployment train, to analyzing deployment data to identify inefficiencies and designing automated anomaly detection for the deployment services. You"ll brainstorm rollout strategies for hotfixes that can"t wait for the regular cadence, drive automation that eliminates manual operator steps, and collaborate with principal engineers and teams across EBS and EC2 on cross-service deployment integrations.

This is a high-visibility role. Server deployment decisions affect every EBS customer, and your work directly contributes to systems reviewed by senior leadership. You"ll collaborate across organizational boundaries and contribute to technical decisions that shape how EBS deploys software at scale.

We value engineers who reduce toil through smart automation, make principled tradeoffs between speed and safety, and take ownership of their systems end-to-end.

About the team

You"ll join a group of strong engineers who own the server deployment and patching infrastructure for EBS. We design and operate deployment pipelines that safely deliver validated server software, automated patching systems that keep server software secure on a biweekly cadence, metrics collection infrastructure for deployment observability, and secure operational tooling for autonomous server operations.

We"re a 10-person team in Boston building toward a future where server software patches and deploys itself - safely, securely, on schedule, with full visibility. There"s significant greenfield opportunity: safe deployment to stateful bare-metal systems at global scale has almost no off-the-shelf solutions, so you"ll be designing from first principles.

At Amazon, we don’t wait for the next big idea to present itself. We envision the shape of impossible things and then we boldly make them reality. So far, this mindset has helped us achieve some incredible things. Let’s build new systems, challenge the status quo, and design the world we want to live in. We believe the work you do here will be the best work of your life.

Wherever you are in your career exploration, Amazon likely has an opportunity for you. Our research scientists and engineers shape the future of natural language understanding with Alexa. Fulfillment center associates around the globe send customer orders from our warehouses to doorsteps. Product managers set feature requirements, strategy, and marketing messages for brand new customer experiences. And as we grow, we’ll add jobs that haven’t been invented yet.

It’s Always Day 1
At Amazon, it’s always “Day 1.” Now, what does this mean and why does it matter? It means that our approach remains the same as it was on Amazon’s very first day – to make smart, fast decisions, stay nimble, invent, and stay focused on delighting our customers. In our 2016 shareholder letter, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos shared his thoughts on how to keep up a Day 1 company mindset. “Staying in Day 1 requires you to experiment patiently, accept failures, plant seeds, protect saplings, and double down when you see customer delight,” he wrote. “A customer-obsessed culture best creates the conditions where all of that can happen.” You can read the full letter here

Our Leadership Principles
Our Leadership Principles help us keep a Day 1 mentality. They aren’t just a pretty inspirational wall hanging. Amazonians use them, every day, whether they’re discussing ideas for new projects, deciding on the best solution for a customer’s problem, or interviewing candidates.
