Software Engineer I

Job Description

The Software Engineer I is responsible for designing, developing, testing, deploying, and supporting modern software applications that enable business operations and enhance the Team Member and Guest experience at Station Casinos. This role works across the full software development lifecycle, with a primary focus on modern web and API development using Next.js, NestJS, TypeScript, and Node.js. The Software Engineer will work as part of an Agile product team and collaborate closely with Software Engineers, Architects, Product Owners, Domain Experts, business stakeholders, and technology partners. In addition to software development, this position participates in the operational support of applications, including production monitoring, troubleshooting, incident response, root-cause analysis, and resolution of application and integration issues. The role also incorporates a Forward Deployed Software Engineering approach working closely with business teams to understand real-world problems, rapidly translate requirements into technical solutions, and remain engaged through development, deployment, adoption, and production support.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, deploy, and support enterprise applications using Next.js, NestJS, TypeScript, Node.js, and related technologies.
• Develop responsive front-end applications, reusable components, backend services, REST APIs, integrations, and business logic.
• Participate throughout the complete software development lifecycle, including requirements, analysis, design, development, testing, deployment, documentation, and production support.
• Collaborate with Architects, Product Owners, Domain Experts, Software Engineers, QA, infrastructure teams, and business stakeholders to translate business requirements into reliable technical solutions.
• Develop and maintain APIs and integrations between internal applications, databases, enterprise platforms, and third-party systems.
• Work with relational and NoSQL databases, including Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB, to implement data access and CRUD operations.
• Participate in event-driven and distributed application development using technologies such as RabbitMQ and Kafka.
• Utilize caching technologies such as Redis to improve application performance and scalability.
• Develop and execute unit, integration, and API tests using appropriate frameworks and tools such as Postman.
• Participate in code reviews and follow software engineering standards, design patterns, secure coding practices, and maintainable development principles.
• Support CI/CD processes and application deployments using Azure DevOps Pipelines, Docker, Kubernetes, and Microsoft Azure.
• Monitor application health and troubleshoot production issues using enterprise monitoring, logging, and alerting platforms.
• Participate in the team's on-call and incident-support rotation as required.
• Respond to production incidents, investigate application failures, identify root causes, implement fixes, and help prevent recurrence.
• Create and maintain functional and technical documentation, including application designs, APIs, support procedures, and operational knowledge.
• Maintain accurate work items, user stories, technical tasks, defects, and documentation within Azure DevOps.
• Continuously improve application reliability, maintainability, performance, security, and operational readiness.

Forward Deployed Software Engineering Responsibilities

• Work directly with business stakeholders and Domain Experts to understand operational challenges and translate them into practical software solutions.
• Develop a strong understanding of the business processes supported by the applications and use that knowledge to make better engineering decisions.
• Participate in discovery sessions, solution discussions, demonstrations, production validation, and feedback sessions with business users.
• Bridge the gap between business proximity and technical execution by taking ownership from problem identification through solution delivery and production support.
• Rapidly prototype and iterate on solutions when requirements require experimentation or business validation.
• Troubleshoot issues across application, API, integration, database, and infrastructure boundaries rather than limiting ownership to a single application component.
• Partner with internal teams and external technology vendors when solutions require integration with third-party platforms.
• Use production feedback, incidents, application telemetry, and stakeholder input to continuously improve products.
• Take ownership of outcomes not simply assigned development tasks-and help ensure solutions provide measurable value to the business.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Software development experience through professional employment, internships, academic projects, open-source contributions, or comparable hands-on experience.
• Working knowledge of JavaScript/TypeScript and modern web application development.
• Experience or demonstrated knowledge of React/Next.js and/or Node.js/NestJS is strongly preferred.
• Understanding of REST APIs, JSON, relational or NoSQL databases, and modern application architecture.
• Familiarity with Git, automated testing, CI/CD, cloud platforms, containers, or DevOps practices is preferred.
• Understanding of object-oriented programming, software design principles, and common software engineering patterns.
• Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills with an interest in diagnosing problems across multiple layers of an application.
• Ability and willingness to learn new technologies, business domains, and development practices.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Self-motivated, accountable, and comfortable working within a collaborative Agile environment.
• Ability to participate in production support and an on-call rotation as required.
