Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8 years of experience in software development, with 5 years of experience in a technical leadership role.
  • 5 years of experience in a people management or team leadership role.
  • 5 years of experience with software development in Java and Kotlin.
  • Experience with Android and its architecture.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science or related technical field.
  • Experience with video/audio codecs and media processing.
  • Experience with real-time communication technologies (e.g., WebRTC, ICE, STUN, TURN, SDP, SRTP).
  • Experience building distributed systems and backend services, and developing Android applications.
  • Knowledge of security protocols such as DTLS, MLS, with experience with encryption.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment, with knowledge of telecommunication standards like SIP and MSRP.

In this role, you will work on a high-impact product, blending telecommunications standards with real-time communication technologies like WebRTC. You will be responsible for designing and implementing features for both 1:1 and group video calls.

The Platforms and Devices team encompasses Google's various computing software platforms across environments (desktop, mobile, applications), as well as our first party devices and services that combine the best of Google AI, software, and hardware. Teams across this area research, design, and develop new technologies to make our user's interaction with computing faster and more seamless, building innovative experiences for our users around the world.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $262,000-$365,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Deliver a cross-app video calling solution over RCS. Ensure the system is scalable, reliable, and secure, adhering to privacy best practices.
  • Collaborate with product managers, UX designers, and other teams (e.g., touching client, backend, and protocol aspects) to define and deliver the product.
  • Utilize existing standards (e.g., WebRTC, MLS and RCS) and define new standards for RCS Video Chat.
  • Influence the Android platform, create new standards and solve user gaps (e.g., interoperable, out of the box video solution).
  • Solve technical problems related to integrating video calling into Google Messages, utilizing existing standards while building for scale.
