Computer Systems Engineer

Location: St. Paul, MN (100% Onsite)
Schedule: Standard business hours (8 AM – 4 PM or 9 AM – 5 PM)
Travel: No travel required
Relocation: Candidates outside Minnesota will be considered; relocation required at candidate's expense
Position Type: Non-Exempt
Position Summary
The Computer Systems Engineer will support the Computer Systems Engineering team in developing and maintaining automated OTA (Over-the-Air) software delivery and patch deployment solutions for Linux-based medical diagnostic workstation platforms. This role will focus heavily on software packaging, installer creation, deployment validation, and software delivery to field devices through CD/DVD/USB and OTA methods.
The ideal candidate will have strong Linux operating system experience, scripting and automation skills, and hands-on experience with software deployment and installer creation in Linux environments.
Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and perform automated software delivery and patch deployment for Linux platforms
  • Build, validate, test, and package Linux software installers and deployment images
  • Support software releases delivered through CD/DVD/USB and OTA deployment methods
  • Participate in patch assessment, testing, packaging, and deployment activities for field devices
  • Design, implement, and test software solutions for embedded, enterprise, or desktop medical device products
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of software infrastructure, tools, and processes
  • Evaluate technical options and provide recommendations for deployment and automation solutions
  • Collaborate with software developers, R&D, testing teams, quality, regulatory, production, and product management teams
  • Support Linux-based CI pipelines, installer frameworks, and deployment environments
  • Maintain technical documentation and support structured engineering processes
Required Qualifications
  • Strong experience with Linux operating system internals
  • Experience creating software installers and deployment packages for Linux systems
  • Hands-on experience delivering software through CD/DVD/USB to disconnected systems
  • Experience with Linux shell scripting, Python, Perl, or Bash scripting
  • Working knowledge of Linux development environments (RHEL preferred)
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience using documentation tools such as Microsoft Word and Visio
  • Ability to work independently in a collaborative team environment
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with OTA (Over-the-Air) software deployment or upgrade platforms
  • Familiarity with CMake and/or C++
  • Experience with Linux security concepts including encryption, whitelisting, certificates, malware scanning, and vulnerability assessment
  • Experience performing software patch impact assessments and upgrade validation
  • Experience supporting embedded systems, enterprise systems, or medical device software environments
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field (equivalent experience considered)
Ideal Candidate Profile
  • Self-driven and highly motivated with strong critical thinking skills
  • Comfortable working onsite in a collaborative engineering environment
  • Able to independently package and validate Linux software deployments from CI builds
  • Strong ownership mindset with the ability to balance independent work and team collaboration
Important Notes
  • Medical device industry experience is not required
  • Candidates with only cloud-based DevOps experience and limited Linux OS exposure will not be a fit
  • Strong Linux systems and software delivery experience are critical for success in this role
